THE USE OF ENGLISH NEGATION BY SPANISH STUDENTS OF ENGLISH: A LEARNER CORPUS-BASED STUDY
(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2008) García Fuentes, Araceli
[EN] This paper is based on a research project by the same author; in which the acquisition of the English negation system is investigated. This is a preliminary account and it is corpus-based. Two learner corpora were used: the International Corpus of Learner English (ICLE) Spanish subcorpus and the Santiago University Learner of English Corpus (SULEC). The former is a sample corpus -it is finished- and it contains written argumentative essays of Spanish speakers. The latter contains both spoken and written data -oral interviews and argumentative texts- and it is a monitor corpus; new data are continuously being added. The Spanish subcorpus of ICLE contains over 125.000 words; whereas SULEC contained over 350.000 words at the moment of the research. A native English corpus was also used in order to contrast the learner and the native use of English negation.

SUSTANTIVOS DEVERBALES ALTERNANTES: PROPUESTA PARA UNA CLASIFICACIÓN DIFERENCIAL
(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2008) Querol Bataller, María
[EN] Since the point of view of Cognitive Linguistics, any linguistic form has its own menaing, therfore, any change in the form implies a change in its meaning. Given that, the main goal of this contribution is to systematize the meaning differenes among certain type of deverbal nouns. They share the same matrix verb, but they differ in their form, either because they use a different suffix or because they follow different derivational process.

SER Y ESTAR CON ADJETIVOS - SIGNIFICACION DE LAS PROPOSICIONES
(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2008) García de María, Javier
[EN] Ser and estar: a difficult aspecto of Spanish as a foreign language. This essay presents an approach that takes signification as guide line. On the one hand, the signification of ser and estar for their own cause; on the other hand the sifnification of the adjectives. The question is no longer what the meaning of a given adjective is with ser or with estar, but with which of the two verbs is it possible to express the unique meaning of the meanings of that adjective.Starting from this basis the approach considers first, the isolated meanings of the verbs and of the adjectives and, second, the resultant signification out of the relation between the two sides. If the meaning of a given adjective can be expressed by both verbs, the selection of the verb is determined by the intentionality of the speaker in the communicative context in which he negotiates. From this background on the syntactical constructions in which ser and estar appear are treated as proposistions in the rhetorical and argumentative sense.

LANGUAGE COMMUNICATION COMPETENCIES IN ENGINEERING EDUCATION REVISITED
(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2008) Pierce McMahon, Joana; Durán Escribano, Pilar
[EN] The ability to learn languages and adapt communication competencies to the changing needs and situations of a global knowledge society and the European Higher Education area is becoming a necessity for future engineers. This article first discusses the demand for communication skills in Engineering Education in general. Secondly, it describes the present state of the Bologna process in Spanish higher education, which calls for a change in focus from an input model to an output one, in which learning outcomes are central. Finally, it summarizes the proposal of developing a ªbank" of language learning outcomes for Engineering Education studies framed within the European Language Portfolio. This bank of learning outcomes, expressed as ªcan do" statements, will serve three purposes: curricula guidance for teachers, guidelines for student life-long learning and autonomous learning.

INFINITIVOS Y GERUNDIOS: ESTUDIO DE SUS RELACIONES EN EL ÁMBITO DEL ESPAÑOL L2/LE
(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2008) Rodríguez Ramalle, Teresa María
[EN] The goal of this paper is to account for the distribution of infinitives and gerunds in Spanish by proposing that they have inflectional features subject to parametric variation; for this reason the syntactic positions that infinitives and gerunds can occupy are different between languages. In order to justify my hypothesis, I will study the problems that English students must face when they are learning Spanish as a second language. I will demonstrate that infinitives in Spanish and gerunds in English have the same features.

(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2008) Torre Alonso, Roberto; Martin Arista, Javier; Ibáñez Moreno, Ana; González Torres, Elisa; Caballero González, Laura; Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia
[EN] This article lays the empirical and methodological basis for the development of a lexical database that analyses the dervative morphology of Old English. After revising the state of the art, the working hypotheses are established and the descriptive principles for the analysis of trnasparent as well as opaque derivation are established. Finally, a step is taken in the explanatory direction by defining the paramenters of the analysis of the bases and adjunts of derivation that are relevant for explanation.

ESTUDIO CRÍTICO DE LAS APROXIMACIONES PEDAGÓGICAS AL VERBO CHINO
(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2008) Casas-Tost, Helena
[EN] This article sets the basis for a pedagogical approach to the Chinese for Spanish-speaking students. It first briefly gives an overview of the Spanish context in relation to the teaching of Chinese, it then examines the differences between the verb in Chinese and Spanish and analyses the way the Chinese verb is treated in a representative part of the specialised literature. After these considerations, the author makes a proposal for a new pedagogical approach of the teaching of the Chines verb, focusing on its definition, classification nd the grammaticalisation of verbal categories, with special emphasis on the verbal aspect.

EN BUSCA DE LA PALABRA EXACTA. OBSERVACIÓN DEL PROCESO TRASLATIVO
(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2008) Schäpers, Andrea
[EN] The purpose of this observational study is to describe the problem-solving strategies employed by a group of Spanish students in order to resolve lexical problems that arise from the translation of a text from their mother tongue into German. It is a qualitative study motivated by previous research on translation processes using introspective and retrospective methods in order to describe the cognitive processes involved in translations and, especially, to represent and verbalize problem-solving strategies, which are evidenced to be crucial for learning how to translate into a foreign language. The experimental design is based on a combination of different data-elicting techniques in order to overcome the intrinsic limitations of each of them. Concurrent data are collected by means of group think-aloud protocols (TAP) and the ongoing translation process is registered using the analysis tool Translog, as well as video recording. These empirical data are completed by retrospective data concerning the experimental task.

EL FACTOR "TIPO DE TEXTO" EN LA COMPRENSIÓN LECTORA DEL FRANCÉS LENGUA EXTRANJERA
(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2008) Ruiz de Zarobe, Leyre; Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia
[EN] The aim of the present article is to analyse the influence of the factor "text type" on reading comprehension in French as a Foreign Language, in the light of recent research in Psycholinguistics. Reading is a competence that subjects know in their own language; that is why we study first the influence of text type in French as a mother tongue, to analyse it then as a Foreign Language. We show some conclusions about the actual state of this subject, and also some paths through which, in our opinion, investigation should progress.

EL ESTUDIO DE LAS ETAPAS DEL APRENDIZAJE LÉXICO BASADO EN EL CATE-CIC
(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2008) Hui-Chuan, Lu
[EN] Taking the base of the Corpus of Taiwanese Learners of Spanish, created by Lu, and applying as special analytical instruments, we've tried to study the lexical development of the students learning Spanish as second foreign language. We've focused on the comparison of the combination of words used in different levels of learning in which we proposed a continuum for the degree of learnablity form the easiest to the most difficult as follows VPrep- V/N-Prep-N, V-Conj, V-Adv/V-N, N-Adj, V-Adj, Adj-N, N-V, Det-N. Moreover, we not only derived, in the developmental stages of learning, an order from early stage to late stage exists that comes from the orthographic type to the grammatical and then to lexical types; but we also identified that the semantic meaning appears in a stage later than the vocabulary with regard to the lexical type of the combinative words

DER VERGLEICH VON TERMINOLOGIEN, FACHTEXTEN UND FACHSPRACHEN AUS. METHODISCHER SICHT
(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2008) Arntz, Reiner
[EN] The methods for comparing terminologies, technical texts and languages for special purposes are of interest from a theoretical, practical and pedagogical point of view. Particularly in the field of jurisprudence, considerable structural differences exist, both on the terminological level as well as on the text level. For the comparison of terminologies, the onomasiological method has proven to be particularly suitable. For comparing texts, various analytic methods have been developed, which can be combined very flexibly. With this as a basis, the description and the comparison of languages for special purposes form the link between the terminologies, the technical texts and technical communication.
