    [EN] The XXVIII Symposium de Cunicultura was organized in Alcañiz (Spain) by the Asociación Española de Cunicultura (ASESCU), the Spanish Branch of the WRSA. The actual aspects of rabbit production were revised in 5 invited papers, 2 roundtables and 21 communications, that are summaresed hereafter.     Technical Note: HEALTH STATUS OF COMMERCIAL RABBITRIES IN THE IBERIAN PENINSULA. A PRACTITIONER'S STUDY

    [EN] During 2002 a total of 414 visits were made to 130 rabbitries, with an average of 903 adult females per farm. Prevalence of routinely monitored diseases was determined on 110 rabbit farms. Mean annual prevalence of coryza in 8,209 females randomly examined in 154 revisions was 22.1 %, as well as mastitis 4.6 %, sore hocks 10.4 %, and mange 2.7 %. After checking 853 males in 60 examinations, prevalence of coryza was 33.4 %, sore hocks 5.7 % and mange 1.9 %. These disorders frequency decreased in the course of the period 1983 - 2002. After 197 visits with troubles (plus 217 revisions), and 431 post-mortem examinations, digestive disorders (60.8 % of the visits and 72.1 % of the necropsies), especially mucoid enteropathy, were the most relevant.

    SEROLOGICAL RESPONSE TO MYXOMATOSIS VACCINATION BY DIFFERENT INOCULATION SYSTEMS ON FARM RABBITS

    [EN] In order to assess the serological response to different vaccination systems against myxomatosis, five groups of 20 rabbits each were inoculated with a vaccine prepared from the Shope fibroma virus (Mixohipra-FSA(R) ). Administration systems differed between groups: subcutaneous injection (group A), intradermic inoculation in one-shot one-impact (group B), one-shot three- impacts (group C), two-shots one-impact (group D) and two shots three-impacts (group E). Clinical signs, general and local, as well as serological response at 28 days post-vaccination were compared among the different groups. Vaccination did not affect health status of rabbits but it produced nodules at the inoculation site, mainly in groups vaccinated by intradermic route where the presence and size of the nodules were closely related to serological response. Although no differences due to the administration system were found in the serological response (P>0.05), subcutaneous injection and two-shot intradermic administration provided the most homogeneous responses.

    COMPARISON OF DOES' PERFORMANCES UNDER HIGH AND MODERATE TEMPERATURE IN A GREEK COMMERCIAL FARM

    [EN] The reproductive performances of intensively reared does were evaluated under farm conditions in Greece, during the summer (hot) and winter (moderate) period. Litter size at birth (respectively 6.9 vs 7.8 live young), litter size at weaning (5.95 vs 7.06) and pre-weaning mortality rate (16.94% vs 9.60%) were significantly affected during hot period, while litter weight and individual weight at birth did not seem to differ between hot and cold period (461 g vs 466 g; and 68 vs 65 g, respectively). Rectal temperature of does and respiration rate were higher in the hot period (39.09ºC vs 38.93ºC; 128.08 respiration/min vs 115.37 respiration's/min; P<0.001). The effects of parity order and animals revealed that parity order significantly influenced total born, born live, stillborn and weaned rabbits, litter weight and individual weight at birth, as well as the does' respiration rate. However, the interaction between parity and period was not significant for any of the recorded parameters.

    GENOME ANALYSIS OF GENBANK KNOWN RABBIT (Oryctolagus cuniculus) GENES

    [EN] After downloading all known rabbit genes, key words specific to complete coding sequences were used to filter out partial coding sequences. As a result, 160 full-length, nuclear, protein-coding and functionally annotated genes were extracted from GenBank database. These genes were subjected to synonymous codon and amino acid usage analysis. The results showed a clear base composition bias in the genes analyzed. The effective number of codons used (Nc values) ranged between 30.07 and 59.98 with a mean of 51.31 with a standard deviation (SD) of 5.71. The frequency of G + C at the synonymous third position of codons (GC3s) varied between 0.3 and 0.96 with a mean of 0.55 and a SD of 0.14, clearly indicating marked variation and heterogeneity in codon usage patterns among the different genes. The distribution of relative synonymous codon usage (RSCU) values calculated for all the genes indicated that codons with a G or C in the third position are widely employed, and although RCSU values for A/T or G/C ending codons are almost equal, G/C appears to play a dominant role. This pattern of dominance was confirmed by the distribution of amino acid occurrence. Leucine (CUN) and serine (UCN) were the most frequent amino acids, followed by arginine (CGN), proline (CCN), glycine (GGN) and alanine (GCN), in relatively equal proportions. The heterogeneity observed in the analyzed genes was then further probed by multivariate statistical analyses. A major trend in codon usage that correlated with gene expression values was revealed. These findings suggest that translational efficiency exerts a stronger influence on codon usage preference than compositional bias in the sampled rabbit genes.
