    Performance response of doe rabbits to Toyocerin(R) (Bacillus cereus var. Toyoi) supplementation

    The efficacy of Toyocerin(R) was evaluated on doe rabbit performance. Two isonutritive diets were formulated corresponding to 2 levels of Toyocerin(R): 0 (diet T1) and 200 mg (diet T2) of Toyocerin(R)/ kg of feed. Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Toyocerin(R) on rabbit doe performance in two different experimental periods of twelve and six months, respectively. Thirty-eight breeding cages were assigned to each treatment. No interaction was found between dietary treatment and experimental period. As a consequence, the results of the two trials were treated as a whole. Inclusion of Toyocerin(R) shortened interval from parturition to effective mating (15.0 vs 10.4 d, P = 0.05) and between parturitions (47.0 vs 42.2 d, P = 0.05) and tended to improve litter size at weaning (by 9.9%, P = 0.09). Consequently, numerical productivity increased from 59.6 to 71.2 weaned rabbits per cage and year (P = 0.01). Litter weight at weaning (25 d) also tended to be higher for diet supplemented with Toyocerin(R) (3673 vs 3952 g, P = 0.10). As treatment had no effect on daily feed intake (370 g as an average) of rabbits does during lactation, feed efficiency (kg of weaned rabbits per kg of feed intake) increased (P = 0.01) from 0.272 to 0.314 with Toyocerin(R) supplementation. Treatment did not affect doe body weight at parturition or at weaning, the mortality of rabbit does and the mortality of young rabbits during lactation. These results suggest the interest of the inclusion of 200 ppm Toyocerin(R) in the diet of lactating rabbit does to reduce parturition interval and increase feed efficiency and numerical productivity.

    Effect of different management methods on the nursing behaviour of rabbits

    [EN] The aim of the experiments was to examine the nursing behaviour of does under different management methods. A continuous video recording with time lapse recorder (24 hours a day) was used. The experimental groups were: FF: Free nursing between parturition and day 16 (n=10 does); FC: Free nursing between parturition and day 9 and controlled nursing between day 10 and 16 (from 08:00 a.m. to 08:30 a.m., n=10); CF: Controlled nursing between parturition and day 9 and free nursing between day 10 and 16 (n=10); HF: The access to the nest box was free during an interval of 16 hours/ day (from 04:00 p.m. to 08:00 a.m.) between parturition and day 16 (n=8). All does were observed between the 1st and 9th day, 74.8 percent of the does nursed once a day and 25.2% nursed more then once a day. The same values were 78.4 and 21.6 percent between the 10th and 16th day. In the CF group, a higher frequency of more than once-a-day-nursing was observed (36.2% of all cases). Between 1st and 9th and 10th and 16th day in the FF group 74.5 and 84.6% of nursing events were in the period of darkness (between 09:00 p.m. and 05:00 a.m.). The corresponding figure in the CF group was 39.3 because of the high frequency of double nursing. It seems that the change from controlled nursing to free has a significant effect on the increased frequency of double nursing. The interval between the evening and morning nursing events of twice-a-day-nursing does was 8 hours and 42 minutes. The duration of daily nursing was decreased during the period of observation. The duration of once a day nursing was significantly shorter than that of the first or the second nursing event of does that nursed twice a day. When changed from free to controlled nursing (Group FC) the behavioural patterns of the doe become nervous (head contact, scraping, wire biting) as can be frequently observed several hours before the nest box is opened. Does tend to adapt to the new nursing method within a few days.

    Impact of caecotrophy on rate of passage, intake and faecal excretion pattern in the growing rabbit

    [EN] Rate of passage was measured on 12 rabbits, either allowed to practice caecotrophy (Control period, from 56 to 60 days of age) or prevented from consuming soft faeces by wearing a plastic collar (without soft faeces intake = WSF periods, 63-66 d old and 70-73 d old). Measurements of digestive transit of the solid phase of the digesta were carried out by analysing the kinetics of faecal excretion of a fibre particles labelled with 141Ce. The excretion pattern of hard and soft faeces, hourly quantified during three complete 24-h cycle during WSF periods, showed that hard faeces excretion averaged 35.3 ± 3.2 g/day DM, while caecotrophes excretion was meanly 10.7 ± 2.6 g DM/d for a mean feed intake of 113.7 g DM/d. During the control period, daily hard faeces excretion was not significantly different (36.4 ± 3.0 g DM/d, for a feed intake of 110.8 g DM/d). The DM digestibility did not differ during control and WSF periods (67.2 and 67.8%). If caecotrophe production is included in the DM digestibility calculation, coefficient fell by 10.5 units (mean = 57.3%). When soft faeces intake was prevented (period WSF), the mean retention time in the whole tract evolved from 23 h (Control) to 15 h (-34%) and the minimal transit time was 50% shorter. The caecal mean retention time passed from 17 h in Control to 10 h (-40%) in WSF period. Caecal retention of large particles seemed less affected (CRlp:- 23%) than fine (CRfp:-48%).

    [EN] Today a great deal of research is focused on the development of new extenders that allow the refrigeration and maintenance of rabbit semen for a longer period of time. In this study, semen diluted with 3 different extenders (A, B, and C) and stored at two different temperatures (4°C and 38°C) were evaluated using both laboratory and in vivo tests. The best results were obtained with extender C (INRA 96) which, in the first 10 h of the test at 4°C, displayed about 80% higher motility compared to the other two extenders and preserved optimal seminal fluid motility for over 34 h after dilution. In the test at 38 °C, the motility of semen diluted with extender C was 52% in the fifth h vs 21% of the semens diluted with extenders A (Lepus) and B (Verdunnungsmischung). Another test involved artificial insemination (AI) of 1800 lactating does using refrigerated semen diluited with the extenders under study. The fertility rate and litter size obtained with semen diluted with extender C was higher (78.1% and 8.65, respectively) than those obtained with extenders A (71.2% and 8.15, respectively) and B (71.05% and 8.13, respectively) in both parallel and sequential tests. In conclusion, extender C offers greater vitality and motility to rabbit spermatozoa, thus higher fertility rates to rabbits does.
