Artículo de opinión: Una reflexión sobre el papel del profesor de matemáticas
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2009-06-20) Escudero, Miquel
[EN] In this paper, a reflection about the humanistic teaching of Mathematics is presented by considering on the crossroads in the new ages and the consecutive updates of the educational plans.

A software system to teach economics to secondary school and first year engineering students
    (Universitat Politècnica de València, 2009-06-20) García-March, M.A.; Zacarés, M.; Isidro, J.M.; Monreal, Ll.; López-Javier, C.I.; Arevalillo-Herráez, M.
[EN] In this paper, we present a graphical user interface which has been devised to teach the basic concepts of economics in secondary schools and first year engineering courses. The application allows students to vary certain parameters and visually observe the effect on the supply and demand curves. The system has been developed in Matlab and employed in a secondary school in Spain. The first results are presented.

La tradición matemática griega y el dominio del mundo en el Renacimiento
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2009-06-20) Garcia-Raffi, Xavier
[EN] In this article we want to show how mathematics have been considered as a part of the tertiary education along the history. Our thesis here is both, any change in the education system must consider its character of universal language in Science and Technology and also its role as a pure science itself and the fact that mathematical teaching has been historically deve oped in the framework of the engineering education. The Mathematical Knowledge since the Ancien Age can not be easily understood without considering the context where it was generated and, in this sense, the teaching of Mathematics in Engineering Education plays a crucial role where any kind of mathematical knowledge, pure and applied, can be considered.

Técnicas Monte Carlo aplicadas a la resolución de ecuaciones en derivadas parciales
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2009-06-20) Serrano Lombillo, Armando
[EN] In this article Monte Carlo’s method is applied in order to solve the Heat Equation. This method provides an alternative and more intuitive possibility to understand the classical techniques. In the last part of the work we study the relevance in the precision of Monte Carlo’s method of four statistic variables. The study has been done bu using Statgraphics and Mathematica.

[EN] Finite Elements Method is a well established mathematical technique for solving Partial Derivative Differential Equations. In this article we present an example of application of Finite Elements Method: the harmonic resonance modes of a guitar obtained from the resolution of the eigenvalues equation via the Finite Elements Method. Graphical output and direct comparison with experiments facilitates the understanding of the method and an extra motivation, establishing a link between Mathematics and the resolution of real engineering problems than is specially necessary in the teaching of Mathematics in the engineering schools.

Derivative-based optimization in colour image filtering: an application for derivative learning
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2009-06-20) Sapena, A.; Morillas, S.; Camacho, José
[EN] Related to the notion of derivative of a function, its application to function optimization is an interesting and illustrative problem for Engineering students. In the present work, we develop an application of the derivative concept to optimize the filtering of a colour image. This implies to optimize the value of the filter parameter to maximize performance. We propose to maximize the quality of the filtered image represented by the Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR), which is a function of the filter parameter. The optimal value for the parameter is obtained by means of an algorithm based on the approximation of the derivative of the PSNR function so that finally the optimum filtered image is obtained.

[EN] We present our experience in using a common mechanism in engineering, such as a slider-crank, to explain classical mechanics in physics and engineering degrees. We also present a graphical user interface that permits the student to visualize the results of different simulations varying the conditions of the numerical experiment.

Online evaluation in Mathematics courses with iTest: assessment of students learning from pre-school through college
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2009-06-20) Joglar, Nuria; Martín, Diego; Colmenar, José Manuel; Universidad Complutense de Madrid; Ayuntamiento de Aranjuez
[EN] An online evaluation software called iTest has been designed and developed by our re- search group HEOL. This group is composed of professors from the Computer Science Departments at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) campus in Madrid, as well as the UCM campus in Aranjuez. Several activities have been carried out with Mathematics students from pre-school through college using iTest in the past three years in our education community. In this paper we describe the most relevant experiences designed and conducted in Mathematics classrooms. In order to make this project happen, we have collaborated with many instructors from different public schools in our community and we have also given in-service teacher training seminars.

[EN] The Kangaroo competition, with more than five million participants, has become during the last years one of the main channels to disseminate Mathematics around the young people around the world. In this note we describe the Kangaroo competition and we comment some of its characteristics in the Valencian Community.
