Incorrectly accounting for preference heterogeneity in choice experiments: Implications for welfare measurement
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-12-02) Torres, Catalina M.; Colombo, Sergio; Hanley, Nick
[EN] The impact of the approach used to describe preference heterogeneity on welfare measures has been widely studied by the academic community. However, the question as to the degree of error in welfare estimation from an inappropriate choice of empirical approach has not been addressed yet. In this paper, we use Monte Carlo analysis to investigate this issue. Our overall conclusion is that, when analysts have difficulties in choosing the best approach relying on available statistical tests, smaller errors in welfare measures are likely to come from use of a latent class model.

Determinants of the price of traditional varieties of tomatoes: A hedonic price analysis
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-12-02) Martínez-Carrasco, Laura; Brugarolas, Margarita; Martínez Poveda, África; Ros, María del Mar; Ruiz Martínez, Juan José; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación
[EN] The goal of this study is to determine the economic value (implicit price) that consumers give to different characteristics with influence in the purchase decision of traditional varieties of tomatoes. To accomplish this aim three hedonic price models have been estimated with data obtained from an experi-mental auction where participants should bid and value hedonically the tomatoes. The results point to a re-lationship between the price and the income level of the participants, as well as the tomato hedonic ratings.

Growth pathways in Northern Spain ́s farm
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-12-02) Vázquez González, Ibán; Sineiro García, Francisco; García Arias, Ana Isabel; Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia
[EN] The article analyzes the pathways followed by farms located in northern Spain, deter-mined by combining the apparent strategies undertaken in recent years and those expected in the near future. The results show that the pathways are affected by location and by farms’ internal factors. Farms located in areas of greater agricultural activity, oriented to dairy production or vineyard, with a greater size, larger families and younger holders are more likely to follow a growth pathway.

The impact of choice inconsistencies in discrete choice experiments’ welfare estimates

[EN] Choice experiments have become an important tool to provide guidance about the value of environmental goods and services. Several evidences, however, are pointing toward an important mis-match between the rationality principles assumed by this methodology and real respondents’ behaviour, what may be giving rise to inconsistent choices. This paper studies the effects of such inconsistencies by using data from an online survey aimed at valuing the environmental impacts of organic farming in mountainous olive groves. The results are analysed by means of three random parameter models and provide evidence on the necessity to appropriately consider and treat choice inconsistencies as a result of their influence on welfare estimates.

A decision framework for a farmer who is risk averse in the Arrow-Pratt sense and downside risk averse
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-12-02) Donoso, Guillermo
[EN] This study provides a decision framework to analyze optimal production iversification decisions under uncertainty for a farmer who is risk averse in the Arrow-Pratt sense and downside risk averse. The decision model accounts for the third central moment of the joint distribution of portfolio returns. This is relevant for asymmetrical return distributions. This general model contains the classical decision model as a special case. The benefit of the proposed generalization is that each competing behavioral hypothesis is discerned econometrically through the significance of the agent’s coefficient of absolute and/or relative downside risk aversion.
