Patrimonio arquitectónico, "slum" y autoconstrucción. Estrategias contemporáneas de remodelación: El entorno de Santa Caterina en Barcelona como caso de estudio

[EN] The article analyzes an urban regeneration project in the historic old city center of Barcelona.Given the unsatisfactory outcome of all previous interventions on similar cases, the key decision here was to proceed according to an alternative strategy which would produce a proper response to some historical users vindications for the neighborhood regeneration such as maintaining the main essential features which have historically determined the site’s character, as well as showing some respect for the historic memory of the inhabitants. Here, architectural design substitutes the usual urban planning tools both in previous analysis and exploration stages. Its starting point ignores all current regulations and only at the final stage, once the proper effectiveness of the project has been checked, those planning regulations are adapted to include the specificities of the new design. In this way, the usual design process sequence is inverted, so to avoid the frequent mistakes which occur due to excessive rigidity and lack of sensitivity in current urban planning regulation procedures when it comes to deal with so complex realities. In the initial analysis we give priority to all the graphic, sensitive, perceptive and experiential aspects. The article also introduces some unpublished materials from Enric Miralles’ studio, author of the Santa Caterina urban planning project.

Los dibujos de proyecto de J.L. Sert para la fundación Joan Miro de Barcelona

[EN] osep Lluís Sert is one of the most prestigious Spanish architects in the world. After several years of exile, he returned to Spain occasionally in the 1950s. Projects such as the Maeght Foundation, Saint Paul de Vence, the study of Joan Miró in Mallorca, and the Miró Foundation in Barcelona originated inthat period. This study undertakes a formal analysis of the building composition and graphic expressionof Sert’s sketches for the Miró Foundation within the context of his personal relationship with Joan Miró and Joan Prats and in contrast with some of his other works. By examining Sert`s drawing patterns we can concludethat he was always faithful to such patterns and maintained a perfect synthesis between the rational idea of architecture and its graphic expression.

Crítica del análisis geométrico realizado por Ulf Linde acerca de la obra de Marcel Duchamp

[EN] This study calls into question the geometric explanation given by Ulf Linde in 1977 for two of the artworks of Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), Bride (La Mariée, 1912) and the Large Glass (Grand Verre, 1915-1923). In the analysis of the first of these, Linde succeeds in diagnosing that the work follows golden ratio proportions, albeit with incorrect mathematical expressions. With the second artwork, the analysis seems to me unsound, since he does not mention the measurements from which the study begins. Because of this, and as proof, I carry out the same analysis as Linde applied to the Large Glass, but starting from the measurements given by Duchamp, finding that despite being very close, they do not correspond to a golden ratio.

Pervivencia de la representación tridimensional en las cartografías urbanas

[EN] The objective of this paper is to show how the visual power of tridimensional urban cartographies prevented their extinction when all evolutionary signs concerning graphical representation codes predicted just the contrary. The volumetric representation of cities, that during the medieval interlude was nothing but the result of the limits of scientific knowledge, seemed meant to disappear once the mathematical and topographical principles which ruled ichnographic representation were described. Nevertheless, the immediate legibility allowed by tridimensional representations along with their incontestable beauty, contributed to extend throughout the centuries a way of representation that has survived up till the present time

[EN] he concern for the conservation of historical cities has been a recurring theme throughout recent history, and in view of the changing theories, there is one approach that is considered irrefutable: the need to preserve the memory of the city, its past, our heritage, through knowledge, so that it can become part of our collective knowledge and thereby endure over time. In this context, studies on the evolution of urban morphology are established as essential, where graphic expression, and especially mapping, must be presented as a source and means of dissemination of data.This paper addresses the methodological process that has been proposed for analysing and developing urban historiographical mapping, as a fundamental phase in studies on the evolution of urban form, being applied to the city of Teruel. Thanks to this process, the importance of following a rigorous graphic process to assess the accuracy of the documentation is found, which has become possible through the use of Geographic Information Systems

[EN] The goal of this work is to analyse a subset of factory buildings alongside a road, an example of linear industrial linear landscape, a typical phenomenon of Guipuzcoa in the first half of the 20th century.The aim is to carry out a graphic reconstruction of a group of buildings that are in different states of preservation, but are at risk of disappearing, and that have been protected individually, but not as an architectural and heritage site.The intention is to implement a valid graphic methodology to research and describe this type of linear landscapes, so that it can be used again to study other similar heritage sites.

La estereotomía de las claves en el gótico primitivo europeo: diferentes diseños geométricos y soluciones constructivas

[EN] The sexpartite vault was the great protagonist of the beginnings of Gothic architecture in Europe and outstanding vaulting was built using this system in Europe’s important cathedrals and monasteries, such as Notre Dame de Paris or Canterbury. By making a comparative study of the principal examples we have been able to bring to light he knowledge of geometry and construction present in Early Gothic architecture and show how it evolved to the remarkable level of stereotomic development achieved in the High Gothic. The carving of the keystone was one of the most complicated challenges of the vault as it received the different tilted ribs at varying angles on plan and in elevation, which entailed considerable knowledge of geometry. The evolution of Gothic stereotomy is reflected in this element and we found three different solutions that show development using diverse techniques to facilitate geometric design and the carving process.

La construcción del convento de san Carlino alle Quattro Fontane: algunas notas sobre la historia y la génesis de la fábrica borrominiana

[EN] his article is focused on the origins and the geometry of the convent of San Carlino alle Quattro Fontane, headquarter of the Spanish Discalced Trinitarians Order and masterpiece of the great Baroque architect Francesco Borromini, which occupied most of his career until his death in 1667. Although the complex was built in different functionally independent phases based on the available economic resources, the convent was designed by Borromini as a unit according with a geometric pattern that organizes the whole.

[EN] The new 2012-2015 surveys, for the convent of Saint Francis of Paola (Paola-Italy), allow reflection on both the role of new software to acquire information on the ways of analyzing architecture, the result of parameters relating to: form, function and construction techniques. Parameters that can be evaluated only by crossing checking the data of new 3D models with information inferred from records of the past.The case-study proposed, relating to the parameter of architectural form, clearly exemplifies our statement.

La cúpula de la iglesia de San Miguel de Almazán dibujada

[EN] The church of Saint Michael in Almazán has an octagonal dome, made up of eight rounded arcs, intertwined in the form of a star, showing its Islamic influence. The complexity of the construction, as well as the stereotomy and intersections of the elements, cannot be seen with clarity in the few drawings that have been done of it up to now, with relatively small floor plans and sections, and which are not sufficiently explicit as to transmit its monumentality. The author takes on the challenge of drawing it in perspective in a grand format, from a realistic point of view, and finding solutions to the serious distortions that occur.

[EN] The majority of the panels created by Athos Bulcão present as its main characteristic the randomness in positioning. His tiles (modules) are designed to, by randomly placement; make it possible that several configurations emerge in his works. This article studies the relationship between these modules design and the number of possible solutions of a project that uses randomness. This will be achieved by the tiles design analysis and its combinatory possibilities, considering symmetry and rotation.

Eric Mendelsohn: lugar, exigencias y expresión en el Centro Médico Universitario Hadassah en Monte Scopus (Jerusalén)

[EN] Between 1934 and 1941, Eric Mendelsohn (b., Allestein, 1887; d., San Francisco, 1953) designed and built the Hadassah University Hospital on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem; a project that is embedded in the latter city’s cultural, political, economic, social and geographic context and whose social significance is wide-reaching. The article tackles some of the relationships that Mendelsohn put into play and would turn out to be decisive: relationships between expression and organicity, dynamics and function (expression and demand), architecture and place, between intellect, inspiration and temperament, and image and architectural reality.

La infraestructura espacial de Yona Friedman. La utopía dibujada

[EN] The spatial Infrastructure belongs to the utopian projects made by the avant-garde groups which were working in the sixties of the xxCentury. Yona Friedman was a part of them as a founding member of the GEAM. This paper will show how his prototype has appeared using graphical and written descriptions and the different denominations that it has had like big container in the beginning to megastructure at the end. This last term relate the prototype made by Friedman to the ones designed by Archigram and the Metabolist group. The Architecture designed by Friedman appears as drawings because he never built it, something that he has had in common which other avant-garde groups, but it has remained as an architectural object.

Paradigma gráfico para la arquitectura actual

[EN] This paper aims to place analog and digital initial sketches in parallel with the application of diagrams in the architectural design process. Both diagrams and sketches are part of architecture’s strategic and graphic heritage. Advances in parametric designs based on diagrams have represented a qualitative improvement in contemporary architectural collective thinking and have played an active role in the graphic paradigm shift.The purpose here is to compare and contrast the qualities of these two elements through recently published references and to explore their scope and effect on contemporary Architectural Graphic Expression. This expression is always part and parcel of the ideological debates that take place in this respect and which always entail graphic consequences, a graphic paradigm shift
