9º Congreso Internacional de Arquitectura Blanca - CIAB 9

La Cátedra Blanca de Valencia ha programado la celebración en la Universidad Politécnica de Valencia del 9º Congreso Internacional de Arquitectura Blanca durante el mes de marzo de 2020.

En cada edición, exponen en el congreso una selección de los mejores estudios a nivel internacional que están trabajando con el hormigón como materia principal de sus proyectos. Los proyectos presentados responden a diversas economías, emplazamientos y funciones, pero comparten el denominador común de haber sido concebidos todos ellos en hormigón.

El Congreso se complementa además con una serie de comunicaciones que aportan una gran cantidad de obras arquitectónicas que completan el gran compendio de obras expuestas en los tres días de Congreso. Las comunicaciones al congreso no sólo tienen un carácter autobiográfico, sino que se realizan comunicaciones de carácter histórico, teórico o tecnológico, mostrando también las últimas novedades desarrolladas por las empresas del ámbito del hormigón.

In each edition of the Congress a selection of the best international architecture studios that are working with concrete as the main subject of their projects will be exhibited through a series of conferences. Likewise, the presented projects respond to diverse economies, locations and functions, but all share the common denominator of having been conceived in concrete.

The communications of the 9th International Congress of White Architecture (9º Congreso Internacional de Arquitectura Blanca, CIAB 9) not only have an autobiographical character of a built project, but also a historical, critical, theoretical or technological nature, showing the latest developments developed by companies in the field of concrete.

Arquitectura Dinamizante: La Arquitectura como DInamizador Económico - La Nucia, Alicante. España

[EN] The idea of the project arises from the generation of a dynamic, open and collaborative space that seeks to attract talent and train it on an ongoing basis. A social meeting point, capable of modifying the character of the industrial estate where it is located thanks to the pull effect. Our project is a faceted hexagonal rock, which sits on a promontory and looks onto the besy view of the landscape of the region, appeasing them. Like an origami the exposed, textured concrete walls fold on themselves, playing with their planes and with the light inputs, causing the sun to highlight the folds of their facade, generating a dynamic effect of shadow games that modify the ediftion throughtout the day. The stairway articukates or organizes the building allowing presentation like TED TALK to take place, and become a social interaction of the centre, this space frames the sky turning into a cascade of light that invades everything. The support spaces arise around it: studios, workshops and offices. Behind it a large collaborative work room open to the outside, generating small terraces of inter-relationship between colleagues.

Como la propia ciudad, el interior de un Campus es un entorno en constante desarrollo. Se ha propuesta una intervención arquitectónica en pleno proceso de crecimiento de un campus académico en una operación de reconquista del carácter original de un lugar mediante la convivencia de la edificación y la vegetación corrigiendo una trayectoria en la que edificar suponía incrementar consumo energético y reducir vegetación, a una trayectoria en la que el lugar se ve enriquecido con nueva edificación que aumenta los niveles de actividad humana, con una presencia de vegetación que busca el sentido del lugar y un consumo energético controlado, tendente a cero.

Tres texturas para tres proyectos - Campolivar and Rocafort, Valencia. Spain

[EN] We propose a vision of how to work white concrete through three projects, which respond to different solutions applied in each of them. First texture: exposed white concrete plank formwork without sanding: Campolivar House. In this project we sought to texture the volumes that shaped building, using the natural stone of the masonry and white concrete. The aim was to generate a stone podium on which a white concrete sculpture appeared, with a more coarse treatment of concrete. Second texture: exposed white sanded concrete seen sanded plank formwork: Hervás house. The project consists of two boxes displaced from each other, sincere to their generating idea as to their materiality, there should only be one material: white concrete, but treated in a more abstract way that looks like plaster from a distance. Third texture: exposed white sanded concrete plank formwork with random shadow lines: Casa de la Roca: This project explores the integration of the building with the landscape on which it sits. The aim is that the concrete, formwork is applied concrete on a nearby scale is sophisticated, for this the smooth plank formwork But from a distance it also has texture, the reason why shadow lines are applied.

[EN] The development of this project aims to re-establish this primitive and sensitive connection in intimate relation with the landscape. Thus, Sverre Fehn and Jorn Utzon use conceptual mechanisms such as platforms and the horizon with which they design and work to initiate a relationship that involves idea-concept, language and design in relation to the landscape, revealing the respect and dialogue tied to it, giving the place quality and sensations linked with the visual domain on the immediate and territorial landscape. In a certain way, the project that is presented follows this idea, to turn the gaze to the horizon, housing and involving the users of the landscape to which they are linked, looking to the sea horizon that establishes juxtapositions while creating tension between the close and the distant, between the physical and ethereal, between the perceptive and haptic, between the conscious and unconscious, between the learnt and the experienced, searching for that contact but also that confrontation - as S. Fehn would say – with nature itself for the shaping and characterization of the place.

[EN] The S&O House is located in surroundings highlighted by the serene image of the Mediterranean Sea. The front of the plot borders the coast, and this proximity determines the main strategies planned for this assignment. The Mediterranean spirit of these surroundings was transferred to the design by designing the house on the basis of its relationship with the elements closest to hand: the sea, the light, the landscape and Mediterranean culture in general. The programme was developed on three levels through a simple composition and based on an appropriate use of materials, where the volumes of exposed concrete framing the landscape acquire special prominence

The Release of Desire: Three Levels of Spatial Expression of Beam in Modern and Contemporary Reinforced Concrete Architecture

In contemporary context the discipline gap between Structural Engineering and Architecture to some extent leads to the loss of the spatial expression desire of structural members. Two conditions are presented in a large number of common contemporary building projects: Rough - lacking the architectural perspective control over the scale and layout of structural members, Absence - hiding the beams with decorative elements such as suspended ceiling. Actually, as one of the most important structural members in a building, the beam has great potential for spatial expression. Since the beam plays an increasingly more important role, three progressive levels could be characterized: spatial scenery - as the fifth elevation, spatial prop - participating in the generation of form, spatial protagonist - leading the order of spatial tectonic. According to the above three levels, classification and analysis to several modern and contemporary buildings, especially several reinforced concrete buildings of the 1960s and 1970s, may be helpful in exploring the methodology against these two above trends of contemporary construction Industry.

ON Espacios horizontales - Lorquí, Murcia. España

[EN] ON is a place dedicated to leisure and the enjoyment of nature. The English word ON means to start, in reference to a multi space that is active and continuously on. ON is also a heritage and landscape recycling and renovation operation. A cistern-palace, a centennial palm grove, a pine forest and cane field, are the natural elements that unite and regenerate in our project. Each of these elements requires a specific project. A transparent ring, a sequence of terraces, a green space and an esplanade of vehicles and islands, respectively. ON is built in concrete and glass. The solid and transparent are combined to re-construct an old oasis of water and palm trees. The textured, colour or painted concrete creates new paths on the landscape, contributes new ancestral walled structures and creates a shadowed space, organic and transparent, almost invisible.

Oito Casas – Multifamily housing. Braga. Portugal

[EN] The article presents the project for a multifamily housing - Oito Casas – that presents a concrete bearing structure and also a set of pre-fabricated concrete brise soleil in the upper level of the main facade. The specificity of the project led us first to the modification of the allotment plan. A procedure that was then followed by the development of a spatial configuration allowed by a concrete structure and, finally, the introduction of the exposed concrete in the form of concrete brise soleils that provide a particular and changeable identity to the architectural set throughout the day, in a distinctive game of shadows.

Casa Codoñer - Alcàsser, Valencia. España

[EN] Codoñer house is a Family House project, the result of a close dialogue and work with the client, a family of four members. The idea is simple, to enclose a courtyard with a stonewall on which it rests, two abstract pieces of rigorous geometry built in concrete. This courtyard is the main element of the house, one more inhabited space, a roofless room in charge of making the formal and functional arrangement of the rest of the spaces. And it is by virtue of natural light, formal expression of time, how these spaces come to life and acquire meaning. It is the spring that qualifies and makes them habitable.

Fisac, construcción por analogías. Hormigón armado y bóvedas tabicadas

[EN] This study is an attempt to trace the origins of the relation between brick vaults and thin ferroconcrete skins; Fisac’s transformation by analogy of a traditional building method into a new construction technique, both of which were associated with the creation of surfaces with curved geometries, their interactions and their differences. The context is the post-war Spain, of the 1940s and 1950s: the period of Autarky and the beginning of the apertura or opening up of Spain to the outside world. The study focuses on a reduced number of individuals: Luis Moya, Rafael Aburto, Francisco Cabrero, Eduardo Torroja and, above all, Miguel Fisac. In the case of Fisac, the article proposes a hypothesis concerning the use of recoverable brick vault formwork for creating ferroconcrete elements.

Olas de hormigón. Gunitado de superficies curvas e inclinadas como acabado final deslizante. Skatepark en Carballo, A CORUÑA

[EN] The irruption of alternative sports in the city calls not only for the construction of dedicated public space, but also for the integration of their practice within the urban grid as opposed to consigning them to the city outskirts or marginal neighborhoods. The construction of such spaces furthermore poses challenges that revolve around the durability and construction complexity of the surfaces needed for the exercise of the sport. In the particular case of skateboarding, this construction involves either placing prefabricated modules on horizontal screeds or executing “in situ” all its surfaces -i.e. energy collectors, tricks and sliding surfacein concrete. This article describes the designing and execution of complex geometries in a skatepark in conjunction with the commitment to the use of concrete due to its durable response (in terms of joints, seat and abrasion) as opposed its more economical alternative: prefabricated modules. Furthermore, this article thoroughly elaborates on the shotcrete´s process applied on the inclined surfaces and curves involved in the execution of a skateplaza. This constitutes an important contribution of this work, as the details involving this type of execution are scarce in the literature, especially with regards to indications of dosage and implementation of gunite as a final sliding finish.

Blanco al cuadrado. Arquitectura blanca en hormigón blanco

[EN] The white color in architecture has a particular dimension for technical-functional, sensory and, above all, spatial reasons. It also contains the symbolic values that over time have determined a kind of myth -with ancient and uncertain origins, but present to contemporary times. The use of the raw concrete allows the construction of intrinsically white buildings, with the possibility of obtaining monomaterial and monochromatic constructions. Throughout the twentieth century, and even today, the mechanical characteristics of white concrete have been continuously implemented and their modalities of use have expanded not only in performance capabilities but also in the aesthetic and expressive field. Following some pioneering experiences of the second half of the twentieth century, in the contemporary scene some realizations stand out, in this sense doubly white, which allow us to recognize the different natures of white concrete and, in particular, that make us identify different and specific techniques to space conception and project methodology. The use of white concrete today responds to the search for perfection of pure and noble material, which recovers the fundamental values of architecture and shapes an innovative dialogue between firmitas and venustas.

Casa XI- Las variaciones del hormigón - Burjassot, Valencia. España

[EN] The house is probably the architectural area where the relationship between space and body becomes more intimate and personal. Thus, the domestic space and its limits are the first place where the body develops and our senses expand. Among the different types of housing, the single-family townhouse is, due to its wide acceptance in the landscape of our cities, an interesting field where aspects such as materiality, ways of living or the relationship between house and city come into play. In this game of dialogues between the body, the house and the city that is XI House, concrete in several variations plays a fundamental role. We go from the precast white concrete lattice (which is nothing but a membrane that regulates the relationship between the house and the city) which creates in the interior a subtle play of chiaroscuro, a calm atmosphere and oblivious to the hustle and bustle of our days to the cast-in-place concrete of the semi-basement walls and the microconcrete of the stairs. This project we present here is an architectural reflection about this typology, the different uses and applications of concrete and the inflections of light in it.

Casa Jacaranda - Parque natural de Cabo de Gata-Níjar, Almería. España

[EN] The article exposes the creative, design and phenomenological process of the project design and construction of the Jacaranda House (2016-2018), a single-family exempt house located in the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Níjar, in Almería. Jacaranda House is built with an exposed concrete structure and formwork using the traditional system of wooden boards. In addition, the walls are built with rustic brick in some of its exterior faces. Jacaranda House work aims to presents itself as if it was an inhabited structure, an infrastructure arranged on the desert landscape of Cabo de Gata. The formal abstraction of this landscape coexists with the organicism with which the terracing of the plot and the garden is resolved. The following article is developed with the help of the plans, drawings and diagrams, as well as the final photographs and images of the construction process. A brief theoretical and historical reflection on the use of exposed concrete in domestic architecture will be linked to the description of the construction job.

Agroturism in Melgaço, Portugal

[EN] When asked to design the rehabilitation and expansion of a traditional rural construction of the north of Portugal, we began by analysing the word preserve, and the dictionary proposes: protection and maintenance. Paradoxically, when referred to the past, these synonyms may indicate opposite concepts: do we speak of protecting the past or maintaining the past? Reflecting on the rehabilitation, we established a synthesis between conserving – the traditional construction, scale and characteristics of the plot – and rehabilitating – providing all the modern and technical facilities required and introducing new materials in dialogue with the traditional stone walls such as concrete – to achieve an intervention respectful of the history, that fits the nature of the non-urban site, promoting and enhancing the authenticity of the region.

Casa Dolmen - Alicante. España

[EN] Located in the city of Alicante, Casa Dolmen has been planned with a clear and emphatic idea in mind, noticeable in its volumetric formalization, its distribution and its completion, with the objective of making space the most important thing. The house looks towards being seen as an essential cottage, composed by vertical elements which support a horizontal slab, which leads to an architectural space with absolute uniformity, a megalithic monument, tectonic, dolmen made with stone slabs. Recovering and adapting some of the concepts of classic architecture, the house, which is a Temple, supports itself on a podium, which is a Crepidoma and an element of transition between the natural terrain and the interior of the house. The duality that is created between the covered outdoor space, generated by an aerial and rhythmic colonnade in the main façade in the form of a loggia, and the solid and three-dimensional wide wall at the back, limits the sequence of the main rooms. Using concrete, with its formworks and its textures, a timeless and sincere, naked and convincing, expressive and monumental architecture is suggested, which is rescued, intentionally, from the fluctuation of likes.

El desarrollo irresuelto del hormigon visto en el oriente boliviano

[EN] This historical and critical study is focused on the effectiveness of concrete as a material, thanks to qualities of flexibility and adaptability that have become successful on a global scale. Firstly, a reference is made to the influence that Le Corbusier managed to impulse around the world, highlighting his arrival to Brazil, a historical milestone that promoted the transfer of the principles of the Modern Movement throughtout Latin America. Subsequently, the work of the architect Oscar Niemeyer is briefly reviewed, to appreciate the structural, functional and aesthetic parameters inherent in the construction technique of exposed concrete. The discussion is based on the establishment of the Modern Movement in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, carrying out an analysis of the pioneering works (1960-1968), the experience of Sergio Antelo that fully incorporated the exposed concrete technique in a later period (1970-1978) and finally a work that exemplifies an end to the use of exposed concrete technique in the eastern side of Bolivia.

Vivienda en la Peña Blanca - Banyeres de Mariola, Valencia. España

[EN] This energy efficient house can be considered modest for its brief program and for its contained architecture that makes the relationship with the city, urban scale and materiality its main arguments. The house, located in the so-called Penya Blanca (White Rock), adopts a conventional three-room program, in order to replace the existing building, whose simultaneous repetition allowed the formation of a residential row in the sixties. The new type of building is integrated into the group of houses by means of the simple continuity of the precise and defined architectural order that configured the set of dwellings. The new building was designed within the regular geometry of the plot, adjusted to the limits, height and occupation, as well as the composition of the facades, so it was placed between the two neighbouring houses following the compositional rules of the whole, both in alignments and in volume. However, the building is the result of reversing the inherited access system, as well as maintaining the housing structure with patio and terrace linked to the living room. The decision to change the access means logically to place the garage door on the lower street and the pedestrian access on the upper street, thus achieving a better and more natural user experience and accessibility.

Una vivienda impresa en Marruecos: prototipo mediante impresión 3D en hormigón para el Solar Decathlon África 2019

[EN] This paper describes the architectural proposal designed to show the capacity of 3D concrete printing for the fi rst edition of the Solar Decathlon Africa competition, which took place recently in Morocco. This approach was a response to specifi c logistic and programming problems that will be described in this document related to questions of functionality and materials. The planning method used in both the conception and execution phase was based on the concept of parametric design, for which a specifi c software was developed by the Valencia company Be More 3D, who designed the building according to the required standard characteristics. The idea behind this prototype was to obtain a practical and useful model that would satisfy the future demand for mass-produced low-cost housing.

Villa Paquita: Ampliar y mantener la edificación original de ladrillo y el jardín de de una casa de vacaciones - Viana de Cega, Valladolid. España

[EN] The hereby article describes the intervention on a brick house of the early XX century, located in a traditional vacational town in a region full of pinewoods. It consists of a simple volume of rectangular layout plan and two floors, with a sober composition that refers us to the railway architecture that was made in the area in the late XIX century.Over the years, the changes in the ownership of the estate plus a great deal of add-ons out of the composition of the main building have altered its slender volumetry and its outside setup. The project gives special care to the recovering of the original construction,setting it free of the auxiliary buildings, and the accommodation to the needs of the new dwellers. Thus, demanding the enlargement that would allow, through a formal abstraction and the use of rough concrete, to emphasize the presence of the former building.
