[EN] This paper presents an educational innovation in the field of mathematics consisting of implementing a "double assessment" system (DDE). Any assessment in teaching should not only measure the acquisition of knowledge in the broadest sense, but also should help overcome the obstacles and difficulties experienced during learning. In the double evaluation, students face a first test of control and, within a few days, they face another test with the same learning objectives. In the time interval between the two tests, in class, those contents are worked especially where greater learning deficiencies have been observed. The experience has been carried out during the first semester of the 2017/2018 academic year and 61 first-degree students from the Degree in Environmental Sciences of the Polytechnic University of Valencia participated. The results of the experience show significant improvements in the performance of the students and in addition there is a greater implication of the students in their own learning.

Evaluating dolphin damage in trammel net fisheries in the Valencia region: Insights to improve management
(Elsevier BV, 2023-12-10) Feliu-Tena, Blanca; Rodilla Alamá, Miguel; Pastor Gimeno, José Ismael; Abalo-Morla, Sara; Bou-Cabo, M.; Belda Pérez, Eduardo Jorge; Departamento de Ingeniería Hidráulica y Medio Ambiente; Departamento de Ciencia Animal; Departamento de Matemática Aplicada; Escuela Politécnica Superior de Gandia; Instituto de Investigación para la Gestión Integrada de Zonas Costeras
[EN] Interactions between dolphins and trammel net fisheries have been described in the Mediterranean Sea as having negative consequences for both cetaceans and fishers. There is a need for studies that evaluate the economic costs caused by dolphins feeding from entangled fishes in trammel nets since most cetacean species involved in these interactions are endangered. This study aims to evaluate the economic impact of the interaction between dolphins and trammel nets fisheries in the coastal waters of the Valencian region in the western Mediterranean Sea. We conducted at-port visual inspections of nets from April 2018 to March 2019, which included 1,849 fishing operations with trammel nets, and we recorded damages to the net and catch and the value of the fishery. Thirty-two interactions were detected during the year of the study. The only observed species interacting was the common bottlenose dolphin. No bycatch of dolphins was reported. The interactions have been impacted seasonally and most of them took place in February and March. There were no significant differences in catch when comparing sets with and without depredation or damage in nets due to depredation by dolphins. Also on average, no differences were found in the value of the catch when comparing sets with or without damage caused by dolphins. The main cost to the fisher was the cost of repairing the nets. The estimated financial loss per vessel and year was €556 (95%CI: €303¿€809). This represents less than 1% of the total yearly income of each vessel in our area. We suggest implementing tools to economically compensate artisanal vessels for any damage caused by dolphins in order to avoid increasing the hostile feeling of fishers towards dolphins and to apply conservation measures to protect this cetacean species.

[EN] The conclusions of some work groups suggest the qualification of the transversal competence CT- 03 Analysis and resolution of problems, without proportional formulas to the final grade of the subject. Instead, the use of rubrics for the evaluation of the proposed training activities is recommended. In this work, the use of a rubric generated by a group of experts is proposed, in which UPV indicators typical of the aforementioned competence are established together with some UPV indicators of the competence CT-08 Effective communication, since in problem solving it is intended that students solve them correctly, in a structured, clear and rigorous way, and using the scientific language properly. The objective of this work is focused on the initial validation of each of the indicators set by the group of experts, establishing an ideal, as well as on the assessment by the students, comparing such gradings. Finally, we propose using a fuzzy coefficient of adaptation to the ideal, which allows to measure the closeness to the ideal of the perception that the students have of the fulfillment of the established criteria and, in the future, evaluating the acquisition of the aforementioned competence in the students.

The Artisanal Fishing Sector in the Spanish Mediterranean: A Sector with a Long History and an Uncertain Future

[EN] The fishing sector is facing major economic and environmental challenges worldwide. However, at least in developed countries, it is also undergoing a major social crisis. This research has tried to quantify and validate this subjective feeling of deep crisis, based on objective and quantitative data referring to the Spanish Mediterranean. Indeed, the results show alarming data. Different scattered databases have been analyzed and it has been exposed that in only 15 years the number of vessels, power and tonnage has decreased by about 40%; as for fishermen, their number has decreased by about 30%, also revealing a serious problem of generational replacement, since in only 10 years, the average age of fishermen has increased by 3 years. A simple linear regression model shows that this downward trend in the number of boats and fishermen will continue at least in the short term. The data obtained invite a deep reflection on the future or even the very survival of fishing in the Spanish Mediterranean in the medium term. This reflection is not limited to this specific area but can be extrapolated to many other fishing areas.

[EN] This paper proposes an indirect method to estimate Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus thynnus) biomass in cages using acoustic techniques. Two Simrad EK60 echosounders working at 120 and 200 kHz and a stereo camera were used to obtain target strength (TS) to fork length (FL) relationships for both operating frequencies. The equipment was placed at the bottom of a floating cage, facing towards the surface to record the ventral aspect of fish. The acoustic and optical recordings were automatically analysed and the combination of acoustic and optical results provided unequivocal TS-FL assignments. Good relationships between TS and FL were obtained for both frequencies even without discriminating data from different fish tilts and without using beam directivity compensation. Stronger correlations were obtained for compensated TS at 200 kHz when reduced tuna swimming tilt was considered. TS measurements were compared to MFS numerical predictions for a Bluefin swimbladder model, with the simulation results showing good agreement with experimental measurements. The results allow the mean tuna length to be predicted in growing or fattening cages from acoustic data raising the possibility of improving production management and of providing a useful tool for catch control estimations made by international organisations (like ICCAT) and government bodies.
