[EN] Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are in the focus of research, politics and industry. They are the key-enabling technology for the named Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS), a highly decentralized flexible manufacturing system called to be the production system of the industry of the future. Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are considered the unifying technology between the cyber and the physical world. They rely on the most modern integration of computation, networking and physical processes where embedded devices monitor, control and manage data from the physical processes. This paper aims to collect an updated general overview and the state-of-the-art of this forward-looking trend by going through different aspects that are related to the application of Cyber-Physical Systems in manufacturing; for instance significant matters regarding its potential, characteristics, the newest advances, challenges and future research guidelines. The main reason behind this work is the interest in being modernized and familiarized in the latest findings and future directions in the manufacturing and production systems. After reading this paper, one may realize that the already labelled as 4th Industrial Revolution could be not that far.
