Los Beguinajes: entornos urbanos y espacios residenciales para favorecer la autonomía y el bienestar de las mujeres europeas en la Edad Media

Abstract

[ES] Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado aborda el estudio de los beguinajes que surgieron en ciudades del noroeste de Europa durante el medioevo. El estudio se centrará en estas comunidades habitacionales en cuanto fueron concebidas y diseñadas por y para las mujeres que querían desarrollar su vida con mayor autonomía. El objetivo principal de esta investigación es analizar la arquitectura y el urbanismo de estos beguinajes, entendiendo su función dentro de la sociedad medieval y su impacto en la historia de la arquitectura. Además, se explorará su importancia desde una perspectiva de género, considerando cómo estos espacios contribuyeron a la independencia y visibilidad de las mujeres en un contexto históricamente dominado por estructuras patriarcales. Para ello, se empleará una metodología basada en la revisión bibliográfica de fuentes históricas y estudios recientes sobre el tema, así como el análisis de casos concretos de beguinajes relativamente conservados en Europa. Este estudio busca contribuir a la recuperación del legado de las mujeres en el urbanismo y la arquitectura, así como a la comprensión de los beguinajes como una manifestación única dentro de la historia del urbanismo y la arquitectura.

[EN] This Bachelor's Thesis addresses the study of the beguinages that emerged in cities of northwestern Europe during the Middle Ages. The study will focus on these residential communities as they were conceived and designed by and for women who wished to live more autonomously. The main objective of this research is to analyze the architecture and urban planning of these beguinages, understanding their function within medieval society and their impact on the history of architecture. Furthermore, their importance will be explored from a gender perspective, considering how these spaces contributed to the independence and visibility of women in a context historically dominated by patriarchal structures. To this end, a methodology based on a literature review of historical sources and recent studies on the subject will be employed, as well as the analysis of specific cases of relatively well-preserved beguinages in Europe. This study seeks to contribute to the recovery of women's legacy in urban planning and architecture, as well as to the understanding of beguinages as a unique manifestation within the history of urban planning and architecture.
