Fernando Garcia Mercadal: el dibujo como manifiesto

[EN] In this paper, we analyse the Fernando García Mercadal’s drawings, with which he studied Mediterranean architecture during his stay in Rome, in the early twenties of the 20th century 1, comprehending them as a manifesto. The traveller nature of this architect, who acted as a link between the Spanish and European avantgarde, strongly influenced the development of his drawing and the character of his work, to the point of turning them into transmitters of the new ideas. The use of the image of popular architecture as a code, which acts rather by convention than by analogy, allows us to interpret it as a manifesto, and to relate it with his later work.

[ES] En este estudio analizamos los dibujos que Fernando García Mercadal realiza para estudiar la arquitectura mediterránea durante su estancia en Roma, en los primeros años veinte del siglo pasado 1, entendiéndolos como manifiesto. El carácter viajero de este arquitecto, que actúa como vínculo de España con la modernidad europea, influye fuertemente en el desarrollo de su dibujo y el carácter de su obra, hasta el punto de convertirlos en transmisores de las nuevas ideas. El tratamiento como código de la imagen de la arquitectura popular, que actúa más por convención que por analogía, nos permite interpretarla en términos de manifiesto, y ponerla en relación con su obra posterior.
