Women at the Window: Artifice, Architecture and Gender in Early Modern Spanish Painting and Literature

Abstract

[ES] La ventana demarca diferentes espacios que generan categorías dialécticas como interior/exterior, realidad/visión, privado/público, que nos ayudan a pensar el espacio y la representación en general, pero que resultan especialmente útiles para pensar el género en siete obras literarias y pictóricas de la tradición hispánica temprano moderna: La Celestina (1499), La Lozana andaluza (1527), El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha (1605), Mujeres en la ventana de Murillo (1655-1660), Cristo en casa de Marta y María (1608) y las dos versiones de La mulata (1617-1618) (1618-1620) de Velázquez. Este artículo reflexiona sobre la repercusión del desdoblamiento de la imagen en las figuras y personajes femeninos, interroga el papel de la casa y la ventana en la demarcación de lo público y lo privado y analiza cómo la posición frente a la ventana permite reunir a las mujeres de diferentes estatus bajo un mismo deseo de subjetivación.

[EN] The window demarcates different spaces that generate dialectical categories such as interior/exterior, reality/vision, private/public, which help us think about space and representation in general, but are especially useful for think-ing about gender in five literary and pictorial works of the early modern Hispanic tradition: La Celestina (1499), La Lozana andaluza (1527), The Ingenious Gentle-man Don Quixote of La Mancha (1605), Christ in the House of Martha and Mary(1608), Kitchen Maid with the Supper at Emaus (1617-1618), and Kitchen Scene(1618-1620) by Vel & aacute;zquez and Two Women at a Window by Murillo (1655-1660). This article reflects on the impact of the doubling of the image on female figures and characters, questions the role of the house and the window in the demarcation of what is public and private, and analyzes how the position in front of the window allows women of different statuses to come together under the same desire for subjectivation.
