Abstract

[EN] The digital condition has modified not only the status of photographic creation but also that of those photographs prior to its arrival that, for preservation or archiving purposes, have been subjected to digitization. Among other consequences, the conversion of these photographs into mere images has entailed the obliteration of certain material features, such as the marks and inscriptions on the back, of particular importance for their proper characterization. Taking as a paradigmatic case the amateur production of the German contingent in the last world war, the research proposes how the examination of these physical signs allows not only to contextualize and date the photographs but also to obtain information about their original intention, their value of use or the circumstances of their circulation, all of them of enormous relevance in this particular case. In order to test the relevance of this type of analysis, the article directly studies a corpus of original and unpublished photographs to date and focuses on certain particularly significant typologies.

[ES] La condición digital ha modificado el estatuto de la creación fotográfica pero también el de aquellas fotografías previas a su llegada que, con fines de preservación o archivo, se han visto sometidas a digitalización. Entre otras consecuencias, la conversión de estas fotografías en meras imágenes ha comportado la obliteración de ciertos rasgos materiales, como las marcas e inscripciones al dorso, de especial importancia para su adecuada caracterización. Tomando como caso paradigmático la producción amateur del contingente alemán en la última contienda mundial, la investigación plantea cómo el examen de esos signos físicos permite no solo contextualizar y datar las fotografías sino obtener informaciones acerca de su intención original, su valor de uso o las circunstancias concurrentes en su circulación, aspectos todos ellos de enorme relevancia en este caso particular. A fin de ensayar la pertinencia de este tipo de análisis, el artículo estudia de manera directa un corpus de fotografías originales e inéditas hasta la fecha y fija su atención en ciertas tipologías particularmente significativas.
