El Color en la Arquitectura Precolombina del Perú: un análisis comparativo entre las Culturas del Periodo Formativo, Moche, Wari, Yschma e Inca

[ES] En el antiguo Perú, el rol de la arquitectura iba más allá de ser el escenario de la vida espiritual y cotidiana de sus habitantes, servía también como principal medio de comunicación entre ellos. Los muros, rampas y vanos de sus edificaciones eran recubiertos de colores saturados, y portaban iconografías en relieves polícromos que relataban con imágenes sus creencias religiosas y estructura política.

Es en este vasto legado arqueológico y cultural de las sociedades precolombinas del país, que se evidencia un conocimiento y dominio del color muy desarrollado, que va desde los métodos de obtención de pigmentos hasta su uso como una herramienta más de diseño arquitectónico. El color cumplía un rol que transcendía la función decorativa y simbólica, transmitiendo información sobre la función, jerarquía e importancia de los espacios.

La presente investigación ofrece un panorama general de la evolución que tuvo el uso del color en la arquitectura del Perú Precolombino. Para lo cual, se establecen como casos de estudio, los complejos arqueológicos más importantes del país que utilizaron policromía en sus edificaciones ceremoniales y religiosas, buscando que difieran en ubicación, cronología y en la cultura a la que pertenecen. Se procede a la búsqueda y catalogación de la información disponible de cada uno de ellos, traduciéndola al lenguaje de representación arquitectónica, y generando información gráfica como planos, axonometrías y simulaciones 3D. Esto permite determinar no sólo las paletas de colores utilizadas, sino que también las estrategias e intenciones cromáticas detrás de ellas. Finalmente, con los resultados obtenidos se realiza un análisis comparativo que permite establecer nexos sobre las formas de aplicar color en las culturas y caracterizar su transformación a lo largo del tiempo.

[EN] In ancient Peru, the role of architecture went beyond being the setting for the spiritual and daily life of its inhabitants, it also served as a form of communication between them. The walls, ramps and openings of their buildings were painted with saturated colors, and surfaced with iconography in polychrome friezes that recounted their religious beliefs and political structure with images.

It is in this vast archaeological and cultural legacy of the country's pre-Columbian societies that a highly developed knowledge and mastery of color is evident, ranging from the methods of obtaining pigments, to their use as a tool of architectural design. Color played a role that transcended the decorative and symbolic function, transmitting information about the function, hierarchy and importance of the spaces.

This research offers a general overview of the evolution of the use of color in the architecture of Pre-Columbian Peru. For this purpose, a selection of the most important archaeological complexes in the country that used polychrome in their ceremonial and religious buildings are established as case studies, seeking to differ in location, chronology and the culture to which they belong. Then, the process of research and catalog of the information available begins, translating it into the language of architectural representation, and generating graphic information such as floor plans, sections, axonometric views and 3D simulations. This helps determine not only which color palettes were used, but also the chromatic strategies and intentions behind them. Finally, with the results obtained, a comparative analysis is carried out to establish links between the ways of applying color in different cultures, and describe their transformation over time.
