Museo del desierto de Atacama. Monumento Ruinas de Huanchaca, Antofagasta, Chile

Abstract

[EN] We approach the city of Antofagasta, northern Chile. With a bird’s eye view, we cannot make out the Huanchaca Ruins of the new building of the Atacama Desert Museum very well and this is undoubtedly one of the successes of the project. The new building is added to the site as an extra layer, without competing at any time with the existing ruins, making evident its secondary role. As an added value, the open spaces that the building generates, such as the amphitheater and the raised area, have become the main meeting point of the city. The authors have not only constructed a building, they have accomplished much more than that; they have managed to “build” a place.

[ES] Nos acercamos a la ciudad de Antofagasta, al Norte de Chile. A vista de pájaro, no se distinguen muy bien las Ruinas de Huanchaca del nuevo edificio del Museo del Desierto de Atacama y este es, sin duda, uno de los aciertos del proyecto. El nuevo edificio se añade al lugar como un estrato más, sin competir en ningún momento con las ruinas preexistentes, dejando claro su papel secundario. Como valor añadido, los espacios abiertos que el edificio genera, como el anfiteatro y las explanadas, se han constituido en el principal lugar de encuentro de la ciudad. Los autores han construido no sólo un edificio, sino que han logrado mucho más, han conseguido “construir” un lugar.
