El Retorno a los Centros Históricos: Reutilización de edificios históricos para fortalecer el turismo cultural. Ciudad Colonial de Santo Domingo, República Dominicana

Abstract

La Ciudad Colonial de Santo Domingo en República Dominicana es la ciudad primada de América y fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO en el 1990. Por su valor histórico, diversas entidades han invertido en esta ciudad apostando por el turismo cultural para no ofrecer solo turismo de sol y playa.

Este gesto de acondicionamiento de la ciudad genera que los habitantes retornen al centro histórico pero transformando sus edificaciones en comercios, hoteles boutique, museos, bares, restaurantes, supliendo la demanda del turista. Estas intervenciones no siempre se realizan velando por la preservación de la identidad, y valores históricos-artísticos de estas edificaciones históricas. Estas radicales alteraciones arriesgan la oportunidad de seguir ofreciendo una muestra arquitectónica del inicio del Nuevo Mundo.

Este trabajo pretende analizar la posibilidad de revitalizar la CCSD, unificando equilibradamente la conservación y la protección de su patrimonio arquitectónico, con su desarrollo económico, satisfaciendo la demanda turística y conservando su identidad y su valor histórico-cultural. Dejando la huella de nuestro tiempo sin borrar las huellas del pasado.

El trabajo pretende abordar los siguientes objetivos: -Analizar la posibilidad de revitalizar la Ciudad Colonial de Santo Domingo unificando la conservación y la protección de su patrimonio arquitectónico, con su desarrollo económico, satisfaciendo la demanda turística y conservando su identidad y su valor histórico-cultural. -Determinar como se ven afectadas las edificaciones históricas de la Ciudad Colonial, sus valores y su identidad, por el incremento acelerado del turismo cultural. -Aportar criterios que contribuyan a la intervención adecuada en las edificaciones de la CCSD.

The Colonial City of Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic is the primate city of America and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1990. For its historical value, diverse entities have invested in this city betting on cultural tourism to not only offer the typical ¿sun and beach¿ tourism.

This gesture of conditioning the city generates the inhabitants returned to the historic center but transforming their buildings into shops, boutique hotels, museums, bars, restaurants, meeting the demand of tourists. These interventions are not always carried out to ensure the preservation of the identity, and the historic-artistic values of these historic buildings. These radical alterations risk the opportunity to continue offering an architectural sample of the beginning of the New World.

This TFM aims to analyze the possibility of revitalizing the CCSD, unifying the preservation and protection of its architectural heritage, with its economic development, satisfying the tourist demand and preserving its identity and its historical-cultural value. Leaving the trace of our time without erasing the traces of the past.

This project intends to tackle the following targets: - To analyze the possibilities for revitalization of Colonial City of Santo Domingo, bringing together conservattion and protection of its architectural heritage with its economic development, in order to satisfy tourist demand, keeping at the same time its identity and its historical and cultural value. - To clarify how the rapid growth of cultural tourism has affected historical buildings of the Colonial City, their values and their identity. - To provide criteria which should be useful for suitable interventions in CCSD buildings.
