The need to redesign the spindle comes from a series of mechanical breakdowns during the
production process of manufacturing PVC. The spindle is located in the intermediate section of
the PVC pelletizing production line, specifically, following the turbo component mixer.
The spindle runs in cantilever and has a total length near two meters. This distribution
together with constant loads of around 400 Kg, makes the spindle and trough to be in contact
with the furthest side from the transmission.
This friction is a very aggressive short-term wear. Those two failures types of transport have
always been the result of this wear on the spindle tip or the bearing convulsion at the fixed
support.
From this data, we study the possibility of modifying this spindle to find a functional model
that avoids these two types of mechanical failures. To do this, we have to use some supports
to compensate the vertical deviation and, the thickness of the spindle will be extended to
withstand the axial load generated to overcome the friction of the material to be transported
in the production starts, as well as the sizing of the power transmission system.
The pellet store in which the helical conveyor is located will be redesigned to facilitate the
maintenance of the system.
