[EN] The emergency department (ED) is the initial medical care service for patients with
health problems that put at risk the function of their organs, mental health or their lives,
and therefore require immediate medical attention.It is a multidisciplinary service, in which
patients need very different care.With a level of severity and / or urgency that varies and
which will decide the waiting time of the patient.For this reason, a high degree of agility is
required for the handling of patients who arrive, since the emergency department attends
to a high volume of patients twenty-four hours a day.For this reason, it is necessary to
have an extreme organization that provides this department with maximum efficiency and
fast and correct patient care.A service that saves the lives of those patients who arrive at
risk of mortality in the emergency department and that does not neglect those who come
for less urgent reasons that also require attention.In view of the above, there are many
people investigating how to improve this department.
The emergence of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the
possibility of integrating them into health services meant a change and consequent
improvement in medical care, information security and access to it, thus favouring clinical
management, and speeding up the respective procedures.
Hospital emergency services deal with urgent health problems, so they work under
pressure and must work quickly and efficiently, sometimes with limited
resources.Therefore a quick obtaining of the necessary patient information is a very
important point for the electronic history of emergencies.
When it comes to optimizing time, the rapid classification of the patient after arrival
is a key point. This classification, through which the level of urgency is determined, is
triage, which is becoming a crucial part of the Emergency Department (ED), in every
single hospital, as a way to better distribute hospital resources.
