[EN] Nowadays determine when and how to modernise or retrofit a logistic system is an unexplored field as warehouses have the opportunity or necessity to perform these changes once or twice the lifetime of the system. This produces a high inefficiency due to lack of knowledge.
Intralogistics in industry generally describes the entire process in a company thatinvolves the connection and interaction of internal systems for material flow, automated guided vehicles, logistics, production and the transport of goods on the company premises (VDMA 2004). This means that intralogistics¿ systems are one of the main key factors of a company production. We could say that a high performance of an intralogistics system will lead to a high performance company, and due to the high competitive globalized markets having a high performance intralogistics is a basic prerequisite for coping with the challenges at the market.
One of the main issues regarding these systems, is the way of lengthen their lifecycle. Maintaining the high standards of warehouses¿ installations and lengthen their life cycles can be done by two ways: maintenance or retrofitting. ¿A retrofit or modernization is carried out with the objective of meeting new or changed requirements of a system by means of modifying the object or implementing new technological advantages¿ (DIN-13306). The main advantage of retrofitting is the fact that as we modify the components with the shorter life cycle we cheapen the whole installation as we do not change the whole warehouse.
On the other hand, ¿maintenance is the combination of all technical, administrative and managerial actions during the life cycle of an item intended to retain it in, or restore it to, a state in which it can perform the required function¿ (DIN-13306). This procedures also allow us to lengthen our ¿AS/RS¿ systems but maintenance activities are limited, there is a time when the modernization of the installation is inevitable, this leads to the need of retrofitting.
Another issue of modern warehouses is the fact that the innovation cycle of some components is shorter than the lifecycle of intralogistics systems, sometimes during the lifecycle of these systems some components are no longer available and a retrofit is needed in order to ensure the availability of spare parts.
The main issue concerning retrofitting is the fact that each intralogistics system is unique, this means each retrofitting project is made ad hoc so operators rely on the experts¿ knowledge. Nowadays companies do not have enough tools to carry an optimal modernisation process by themselves and this leads to a huge uncertainty while planning this type of project.
Therefore, the main purpose of this BA is to support companies in their retrofitting projects of their AS/RS systems by applying the actual knowledge on change management and adapting it to a retrofit process.
