El valor de lo ordinario. El concepto As Found como praxis en los proyectos de Alison y Peter Smithson.

Abstract

[ES] El clima de posguerra que se respiraba en Gran Bretaña a principios de los años 50 propició una serie de encuentros en los que Alison y Peter Smithson, junto con el fotógrafo Nigel Henderson y el artista Eduardo Paolozzi, se propusieron repensar el papel de las Artes y la Arquitectura tras un periodo de fragmentación social y falta de recursos. En el presente trabajo se expone una actitud, representada por las figuras de Alison y Peter Smithson, manifestando una manera de observar y hacer en arquitectura, donde el concepto “As Found”/”Así hallado”, se explica como tendencia a trabajar con lo existente, estableciendo relaciones, mejorando sus cualidades, actuando con sensibilidad y valorando lo ordinario. El concepto se descompone en tres estadios concatenados para estructurar el siguiente trabajo: En primer lugar se aborda el fenómeno de la observación, un método analítico donde los sentidos, los objetos, las personas y el contexto establecen una serie de relaciones simbióticas. El segundo estadio corresponde a la reacción, el proceso activo sobre una situación determinada, la facultad del observador para generar nuevos estímulos. El tercer estadio se manifiesta en la transformación, donde la virtud reside en la capacidad de cambio y la interacción con el factor del tiempo. Por último, se establece una reflexión sobre la actualidad, ejemplificando el concepto “As Found” en la práctica de diferentes estudios de arquitectura y su manera de abordar los proyectos.

[EN] The post-war climate in Britain during the early 1950s prompted a series of meetings in which Alison and Peter Smithson, together with the photographer Nigel Henderson and the artist Eduardo Paolozzi, set out to rethink the role of the Arts and Architecture after a period of fragmentation and lack of resources. The present work exposes a certain attitude, represented by the figures of Alison and Peter Smithson, manifesting a way of observing and making architecture, where the “As Found” concept is explained as a tendency to work with the existing, establishing relationships, improving its qualities, acting with sensitivity and valuing the ordinary. The concept is divided into three linked stages in order to structure the following work: Firstly, the phenomenon of observation is addressed, an analytical method where senses, objects, people and context establish a series of symbiotic relationships. The second stage corresponds to the reaction, the active process of a given situation, the observer's ability to generate new stimuli. The third stage manifests itself in transformation, where the virtue lies in the capacity for change and the interaction with the factor of time. Finally, a reflection on the present day is established, exemplifying the concept in the practice of different architectural studios and their way of approaching projects.
