[EN] Palma de Mallorca Airport, also known as Son Sant Joan International Airport, is one of
the Spanish airports with the most activity, since it has ranked the third position in passenger
traffic statistics in the recent years, even during summer seasons, it manages to rise up to the
second position taking over from Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport.
An airport with a large flow of passengers involves numerous landings and takeoffs throughout
the day. Only in the year 2019 (we omit the period derived from COVID-19), the sum of the
activity of the Palma airport and the rest of the islands; Menorca and Ibiza, add up to a total of
324,194 operations. Therefore, it must have a robust and effective surveillance system, not only
to offer coverage to the referred airport, but also to the rest of the Balearic islands.
For this reason, this Master’s Thesis aims to analyze and propose new surveillance systems,
specifically the multilateration system. This system was implemented in 2003, it covers the
airport environment of the island of Palma de Mallorca and given the projected increase in air
traffic in this volume of coverage, it is necessary to restructure and adapt the system.
As a starting point, the current situation of the system, its shortcomings and needs will be
exposed, and then, through a coverage simulation tool, one or several proposals will be carried
out for a subsequent analysis of its viability, both technical and economic.
It will also be evaluated the expansion of the multilateration system for coverage in the
TMA environment, covering the entire Balearic islands.
