[EN] This project studies the aerodynamic characteristics that surround the stabilizer surfaces of a sounding rocket during subsonic flight. Specifically, the ASTRA rocket, created by the Faraday Rocketry UPV team, from Spontaneous Generation Programme, will be the prototype to work with.
With the present study, the Structures & Aerodynamics Department of this group pretends to obtain an optimal configuration of the model fins, in order to reduce their contribution to the drag of the rocket assembly and increase their aerodynamic efficiency.
Throughout the work, the different issues related to this type of vehicle are analysed in detail. First, the project focusses on the beginnings and first steps of rocketry and its evolution over time. Then the aerodynamic CFD study itself is carried out.
A CAD (Computer Aided Design) design of the model has been elaborated, and exported to a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) program, to perform the required simulations. Results are analysed to examine the performance of the prototype fins during subsonic flight in a compressible flow.
Finally, the results obtained are discussed and conclusions drawn, which will be useful to implement an optimal fin model in a future final prototype.
