[EN] Introduction. The pelvic floor musculature is a great unknown for the
general public and for musicians in particular. Considering that a musical career
requires a very high number of hours and years, the pelvic floor can be affected by
high pressures during instrumental practice. The lack of knowledge on this issue
makes it very difficult for them to relate any pelvic floor dysfunction with the
musical practice.
Objectives. The aim of this report is to make a preliminary study to
investigate the level of knowledge that musicians have about pelvic floor and its
functionality, as well as the different dysfunctions that can affect them due to the
constant pressures that our pelvic muscles are under.
Methodology. A study using a questionnaire is aimed to students of Higher
Music Degree, teachers of educational centers and active professional musicians of
choirs, bands or professional music orchestras in Spain of all instrumental
specialties or singing.
Results. According to the investigation, 91.6% of musicians say they have
heard of pelvic floor and 73.5% would be able to say what it is. Among the pelvic
floor dysfunctions, 39.4% indicate urinary incontinence and lack of tone. 14.2%
suffer from dysfunctions that have little impact on their daily life, although only
9% have visited the doctor.
Conclusions. According to the survey, urinary incontinence is the most
common dysfunction suffered by the participants. Bearing in mind that the subjects
could not be analyzed in isolation in the practice of music, because participants are
affected by other situations such as pregnancy, childbirth, sports or postural habits.
All of them should be taken into account because all of them are risk factors for the
pelvic floor. However, the study has shown us the case of young women who play
wind instruments. They are affected by dysfunctions in the pelvic floor although
they are not exposed to other risks, so we should continue investigating this area
