[EN] Thermohaline circulation describes the global movement of water masses throught the planet, playing a determining role in climate. In addition to the well-known system of surface currents, the termohaline circulation is completed by the abyssal or deep circulation, about wich we have much less information despite representing 80% of the total water mass. The Stommel-Arons model considers abyssal circulation starts with the sinking of cold waters in localized áreas of the planet, and it flows through the bottom following a route towards the opposite hemisphere, with a particular pattern deermined by the rotation of the earth. Giving the little information available to test the validaty of these models, laboratory-scale experiments are key to visualizing and understanding the characteristics of this important part of the circulation.
In this work we intend to design an experimental system, and accompany it with the corresponding theorical framework, wich allows reproducing the fundamental characteristics of the abyssal circulation, predicted by Stommel-Arons, and make a systematic analysis of the behavior of these currents against the modification of some physical parameters such as the incoming wáter flow, or the system rotational speed.
