Spatial construction through the collection: The house of Sir John Soane

Abstract

[EN] This paper examines the relationship between the inhabitant, the house and the objects it contains to reveal the role that the collection plays in the construction of the domestic space. The focus of the study is the house of John Soane in London, an exemplary case where the collection becomes the defining and creative element of the space. The close connection between collection and architecture is particularly apparent in Descriptions, the text in which Soane describes his own house through the objects in each room, suggesting an imagined tour to uncover the virtues of the architectural space. Soane s house is consequently shown to be a diverse collection of architecture which takes shape in the simultaneous construction of three collections:fragments of architecture, buildings and constructed architectural spaces. In a way, what Soane creates in theinterior of his house is an architectural capriccio, a fantasy that represents an idealized vision of his own idea of architecture whose greatest value and attraction lie precisely in the deliberate juxtaposition of the piecesand the dialogue that emerges between them, resulting in a three-dimensional space imbued with intended meanings.

[ES] Esta investigación se centra en las relaciones existentes entre el habitante, la casa y los objetos que contiene, para revelar el papel que adquiere la colección en la construcción del espacio doméstico. El objeto de estudio es la casa de John Soane en Londres, como caso ejemplar en el que la colección se convierte en definidora y creadora de espacio. El estrecho vínculo entre colección y arquitectura se manifiesta especialmente en las Descriptions, el texto en el que Soane describe su propia casa a través de los objetos de cada estancia, planteando un recorrido ideado para revelar las virtudes del espacio arquitectónico. Se muestra así que la casa de Soane es una gran colección de arquitectura, materializada en la construcción simultánea de tres colecciones: de fragmentos de arquitectura, de edificios y de espacios arquitectónicos construidos. De algún modo, lo que Soane construye en el interior de su casa es un capricho arquitectónico. Una fantasía que representa una visión idealizada de su propia idea de arquitectura, cuyo mayor valor y atractivo reside precisamente en la yuxtaposición deliberada de las piezas y en el diálogo que emerge entre ellas, construyendo así un espacio tridimensional cargado de significados intencionados.
