Evolución formal y constructiva de las escaleras de caracol en la Catedral de Sevilla (1433-1560)

Abstract

[EN] The spiral staircases assumed a fundamental role in the construction process of the Seville cathedral and once the height of the terraces was reached, after closing the vaults, they took on an important role in the exterior appearance of the building, emulating small spires, lanterns, pinnacles and domes. A formal repertoire in which we can perceive the evolution of these architectural elements. In this article we propose a formal and constructive analysis of these stairs, following the peculiar way in which this Gothic factory was built, from the foot to the head and how new models are introduced in the Renaissance period. We will identify its typological variants, its ability to become functional elements, represent meanings, as well as become effective chronological indicators.

[ES] Las escaleras de caracol asumieron un papel fundamental en el proceso constructivo de la catedral hispalense y una vez alcanzada la altura de las terrazas, tras cerrar las bóvedas y cubiertas, adoptaron un papel relevante en la apariencia exterior del edificio, emulando pequeños chapiteles, linternas, pináculos y cúpulas. Un repertorio formal en el que podemos percibir la evolución de estos elementos arquitectónicos. Planteamos en este artículo un análisis formal y constructivo de estas escaleras, siguiendo la peculiar manera en la que se levantó esta fábrica gótica, desde los pies a la cabecera, y como se introducen nuevos modelos en la etapa renacentista. Identificaremos sus variantes tipológicas, su capacidad para constituirse en elementos funcionales, representar significados, así como constituirse en eficaces indicadores cronológicos.
