Light Verb Constructions as a Testing Ground for the Gravitational Pull Hypothesis. An Analysis Based on the COVALT Corpus

Abstract

[ES] Este estudio tiene como objetivo probar la hipótesis de atracción gravitacional (GPH) sobre construcciones de verbos ligeros (LVC) que transmiten estados emocionales y eventos dinámicos en varias combinaciones de idiomas, con inglés y francés como lenguas de origen y catalán y español como lenguas de destino. Se basa en los subcorpus correspondientes del corpus de traducción COVALT. El GPH postula tres causas cognitivas de los efectos traduccionales: prominencia y conectividad del idioma de origen o de destino. Se espera que diferentes configuraciones de estas causas den como resultado una representación excesiva o insuficiente de las características de la lengua de destino. Este estudio intenta impulsar la teoría formulando hipótesis en el nivel más abstracto de los tipos de LVC en lugar de los LVC individuales. Los efectos previstos (infrarrepresentación de los LVC que transmiten estados emocionales y ninguna diferencia significativa para aquellos que transmiten eventos dinámicos) se confirman en cinco de las ocho situaciones en las intersecciones de los tipos de LVC y los pares de lenguas.

[EN] This study aims to test out the Gravitational Pull Hypothesis (GPH) on Light Verb Constructions (LVCs) conveying emotional states and dynamic events in a number of language combinations, with English and French as source and Catalan and Spanish as target languages. It draws on the corresponding sub-corpora of the COVALT translation corpus. The GPH posits three cognitive causes of translational effects: source or target language salience and connectivity. Different configurations of these causes are expected to result in over- or under-representation of target language features. This study attempts to push the theory forward by formulating hypotheses at the more abstract level of LVC types rather than individual LVCs. The effects predicted (under-representation of LVCs conveying emotional states and no significant differences for those conveying dynamic events) are confirmed in five out of the eight situations at the intersections of LVC types and language pairs.
