Patrimonio industrial de Mota del Cuervo: restauración, rehabilitación y redefinición de un símbolo.

Abstract

[ES] En una sierra cercana a Mota del Cuervo (Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha) se alzan siete molinos, de los cuales solo tres albergan un uso: como centro de información de turismo en el que, una vez al mes, se realiza una molienda simbólica; como museo de un artista local; y como sede de la Asociación de Amigos de los Molinos de Mota del Cuervo. Este patrimonio industrial tenía antiguamente un uso continuado proporcionando alimento diario. Sin la posibilidad de mantener su uso original, los edificios antiguos deben poder adaptarse a funciones compatibles como medio para garantizar su conservación. Actualizados a las nuevas necesidades y salvaguardada su antigua esencia, es posible mantener en el presente las enseñanzas del pasado. El monumento no se pierde, sino que adquiere un nuevo carácter.

Mota del Cuervo es conocido como ¿El balcón de La Mancha¿ por su altitud privilegiada que permite divisar el paisaje y los pueblos cercanos. Además, sus noches no tienen, a penas, contaminación lumínica. Un observatorio, no solo de los pueblos durante el día, sino de las estrellas por la noche, reforzaría la denominación de este lugar y podría generar un nuevo foco de interés que, preservando la identidad del conjunto, realce la cultura del patrimonio industrial y permita añadir la astronomía entre las nuevas actividades que se desarrollan en los molinos.

Se propone, por tanto, la realización de un estudio para la restauración y rehabilitación como observatorio astronómico de uno de los siete molinos de Mota del Cuervo. Los molinos se ubicaban en lo alto de los cerros para aprovechar la fuerza del viento a su favor en las labores de la molienda, por lo que, en sí mimos, permiten tomar el punto más alto bajo el que observar el cielo nocturno. El trabajo incluirá los apartados necesarios de un estudio previo: Conocimiento del edificio histórico, levantamiento métrico-descriptivo, revisión del estado de conservación material y estructural, programa de proyecto básico y propuesta de adaptación de la cubierta para la disposición del telescopio. Para asegurar la compatibilidad del uso propuesto, se estudiarán los sistemas de observación astronómica y los diseños actuales de telescopios en función del nivel de detalle que sea posible captar y el mejor aprovechamiento y adecuación a la cubierta del molino. Actualmente, los edificios se encuentran en buen estado de conservación, de manera que lo más importante será cómo adaptar el programa al espacio disponible. Además, dada la distancia de los molinos al pueblo, se tratará de aplicar sistemas de energía renovable que aseguren la autonomía de la propuesta.

Se espera que el trabajo contribuya a la puesta en valor de este patrimonio cultual industrial, devolviéndole la vida y el movimiento continúo que formaban parte de su esencia, a la vez que se descubre un nuevo uso, posiblemente compatible y adecuado, capaz de aprovechar también el gran valor natural y paisajístico para crear un lugar de estudio y conocimiento.

[EN] In a mountain range near Mota del Cuervo (Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha) stand seven mills, of which only three have a use: as a tourist information centre where, once a month, a symbolic milling is carried out; as a museum of a local artist; and as the headquarters of the Association of Friends of the Mills of Mota del Cuervo. This industrial heritage once had a continuous use providing daily food. Without the possibility of maintaining their original use, the old buildings must be able to be adapted to compatible functions as a means of ensuring their conservation. Updated to new needs and safeguarding their ancient essence, it is possible to maintain the lessons of the past in the present. The monument is not lost, but acquires a new character.

Mota del Cuervo is known as "The balcony of La Mancha" due to its privileged altitude, which allows a view of the landscape and the nearby villages. Furthermore, its nights are almost free of light pollution. An observatory, not only of the villages during the day, but also of the stars at night, would reinforce the name of this place and could generate a new focus of interest which, while preserving the identity of the site, would enhance the culture of the industrial heritage and allow astronomy to be added to the new activities carried out in the mills.

It is therefore proposed to carry out a study for the restoration and rehabilitation of one of the seven mills of Mota del Cuervo as an astronomical observatory. The mills were located at the top of the hills to harness the power of the wind to their advantage in the milling work, so that, in themselves, they provide the highest point from which to observe the night sky. The work will include the necessary sections of a preliminary study: knowledge of the historic building, metric-descriptive survey, review of the state of material and structural conservation, basic project programme and proposal for the adaptation of the roof for the arrangement of the telescope. To ensure the compatibility of the proposed use, astronomical observation systems and current telescope designs will be studied in terms of the level of detail that can be captured and the best use and adaptation to the roof of the mill. The buildings are currently in a good state of conservation, so the most important thing will be how to adapt the programme to the available space. In addition, given the distance of the mills from the village, renewable energy systems will be applied to ensure the autonomy of the proposal.

It is hoped that the work will contribute to the enhancement of this industrial cultural heritage, giving it back the life and continuous movement that were part of its essence, while at the same time discovering a new, possibly compatible and appropriate use, capable of also taking advantage of the great natural and landscape value to create a place for study and knowledge.
