El Beato de Liébana, precedente del Cuento del Grial de Chrétien de Troyes

[EN] We start from a question with reference to Chrétien de Troyes novel, The Tale of the Grail: whether it can be considered that the first literary mention of the grail is found in this novel, dated c. 1181- 1182. Our study is based on a structural methodology: a signifier corresponds to a meaning. But understanding that the signifier should not be restricted to the word in double-articulated language, but also to the image in an artistic creation. This being so, we believe that the medieval Blessed Miniates (10th-13th centuries), editions of the Commentary on the Apocalypse of John by Saint Beatus of Liébana (8th century), are structured with meanings whose signifiers are, beyond words, the images of your thumbnails.  In them appears, among other elements, the grail, which therefore should be considered as having a literary existence prior to Chrétien s Grail, even as source of his work the Tale of the Grail.

[ES] Partimos de una cuestión con referencia a la novela de Chrétien de Troyes, el Cuento del Grial: sobre si puede considerarse que la primera mención literaria del [grial] se encuentra en esta novela, (c.1181-1182) Nuestro estudio se fundamenta en una metodología estructural: a un significante, un significado. Pero entendiendo que el significante no debe restringirse sólo al ámbito de la palabra en el lenguaje de doble articulación sino que también la imagen puede considerarse como signo, con la doble cara significante / significado. Siendo esto así, estimamos que los Beatos miniados medievales (ss. X-XIII), copias-ediciones del Beato de Liébana Comentario del Apocalipsis de Juan (s. VIII), se estructuran con significados cuyos significantes son, más allá de las palabras, las imágenes de sus miniaturas. En ellas aparece, entre otros elementos, el [grial], que, en concordancia con el supuesto previo, tiene un significado literario anterior al del Grial de Chrétien.
