The sgraffito that decorates the Baroque chapel of Santa Bárbara in the church of San Juan del Hospital de Valencia

[EN] This study examines the sgraffito decorative technique used in the Baroque architecture of the Chapel of Santa Bárbara in the Church of San Juan del Hospital (Valencia). It analyses the technical and stylistic features of the sgraffito patterns and explores their symbolic and aesthetic meaning within the Baroque context. The results identify a repertory of common geometric and vegetal motifs—circles, rhombi and stylised flowers—also found in other religious buildings of the period. These designs are consistent with late-seventeenth-century artistic trends, particularly in the second half of the century, when Baroque decoration became more standardised and laden with symbolic content. Overall, the sgraffito of the Chapel of Santa Bárbara stands out as a significant example of the artistic and ideological synthesis of Baroque Valencia.

[ES] Este estudio analiza la técnica decorativa del esgrafiado en la arquitectura barroca de la capilla de Santa Bárbara, situada en la iglesia de San Juan del Hospital (Valencia). Se examinan sus características técnicas y estilísticas, así como su significado simbólico y estético en el marco del Barroco. El análisis identifica un repertorio de motivos geométricos y vegetales —círculos, rombos y flores estilizadas— habituales en otros edificios religiosos de la época. Estos patrones se corresponden con las tendencias artísticas de finales del siglo XVII, especialmente en su segunda mitad, cuando la decoración barroca tendió a estandarizarse y a reforzar su carga simbólica. En conjunto, el esgrafiado de la capilla de Santa Bárbara constituye un ejemplo destacado de la síntesis artística e ideológica del Barroco valenciano.
