UN HECHO OLVIDADO: EL TERREMOTO DEL 15 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 1775

Abstract

El día 15 de noviembre del 1775, poco después de las siete de la mañana, la ciudad de Valencia sufrió un terremoto. Se trató de un evento extraordinario para la ciudad de Valencia que se ubica en una zona de bajo riesgo sísmico. Las noticias sobre este evento catastrófico, afortunadamente sin pérdida de vidas humanas, se encuentran entre las páginas de las Actas del Consell del Ayuntamiento de Valencia y algunos expedientes del fondo de la Policía Urbana, ambos conservados en el Archivo Histórico Municipal de Valencia En este artículo se presentan los datos relativos a los daños ocasionados por el terremoto a los edificios de la ciudad, basándose en dos de los cuatro expedientes de visura ordenados por el mismo Corregidor a los vehedores del Tribunal del Repeso de la Ciudad de Valencia.

Shortly after 7:00 a.m. on November 15th, 1774, the city of Valencia experienced an earthquake. It was an extraordinary event for this city, placed as it is, in a low risk seismic area. The news of this catastrophic event, which fortunately did not cause any loss in human life, can be found in the Meeting Proceedings of the City Hall of Valencia and in the City Police Records, both conserved in the Historic City Archives of Valencia. This article presents the data regarding the damage to city buildings caused by the earthquake and is based on two of the four reports in which the Chief Magistrate asked the municipal architects about the situation and state of conservation of all these buildings.
