Computational offloading from an Android device

Abstract

The goal of this research project is to study the feasibility of computation o oading in mobile devices. In order to achieve this, it will be necessary to implement an Android app that performs some heavy computation and an Android library that allows the o oading in a transparent way, not only for the user, but also for the developer. It will be also needed the implementation of a server-side application that runs in a laptop and accepts the same heavy computations from the mobile device, and sends the result back once it nished. This programs will be used to perform experiments with di erent kind of problems i.e. heavy computations with di erent properties (size, computation complexity, etc.) And the measurement of certain data like execution time and energy consumption will allow the comparison of the bene ts of device execution versus the ones from computation o oading. The library will also include a function that decides, based on the problem properties, whether to o oad the computation or not. Some other experiments will be performed in order to see if this function improves the performance of the application.
