Estudi tècnic i estilístic de la pintura mural mudèjar d’Aragó: L’església de San Miguel d’Ambel (Saragossa)

Abstract

[EN] The church of San Miguel of Ambel (Zaragoza) was declared a historic and artistic landmark by the Spanish Government in 2001. This recognition led to the appreciation of the monument and later restoration works. Recently, the company "conservAR-Servicios para el patrimonio cultural" has accomplished the recovery of the wall paintings in the second section of the vault, which were hidden by several layers of overpaints and whitewash.

There are a lot of publications about the materials used in the mudejar art, especially the plaster, ceramics and wood. But the Aragonese mudéjar wall paintings has barely been studied. Therefore, this research is intended to undertake the study of the mudejar wall paintings in order to provide new evidences on this subject. This way, apart of achieving the proposed objectives, we will focus on a topic that has been ignored during all of this time and might provide information which would be worthy to be incorporated into the study of several fields, especially the restoration of cultural heritage.

This work consists of a study in depth of the historical context, the compilation of technical and stylistic information about the wall paintings in the second section of the vault of San Miguel Church of Ambel and a mainly stylistic comparison between several contemporary churches in order to establish a particular type of decorative wall paintings inside the 14th century Aragonese mudejar art.

To achieve this last section, we have first studied the artistic context, and especially mudejar work teachers (particularly the role they had in the execution of the wall paintings) and the methodology they followed during the execution of the mudejar wall paintings, with their influences and inhereted techniques. Finally, we have drawn up an inventory of the mudejar wall paintings in the churches from the 14th century from the western part of the province of Zaragoza.

[ES] La iglesia de San Miguel de Ambel (Zaragoza) fue declarada Bien de Interés Cultural en 2001, reconocimiento que llevó a la revalorización del monumento y las posteriores intervenciones de restauración. Recientemente la empresa “conservAR- Servicios para el patrimonio cultural” ha llevado a cabo la recuperación de las pinturas murales ubicadas en el segundo tramo de dicha iglesia, hasta hace poco cubiertas por varias capas de repintes y encalados.

Hay numerosas publicaciones sobre el estudio de los materiales empleados en el arte mudéjar, especialmente del yeso, la cerámica y la madera, pero apenas se ha profundizado en el estudio de la pintura mural mudéjar aragonesa. Con esta investigación se pretende emprender en el estudio de la pintura mural mudéjar, aportando nuevos datos que, además de cumplir los objetivos propuestos, inicien un nuevo camino hacia la exploración de un tema que ha sido desatendido y puede aportar información capaz de incorporarse al estudio de varias ramas, especialmente la restauración de los bienes culturales.

El presente trabajo consta de un estudio en profundidad del contexto histórico, la compilación de información técnica y estilística sobre las pinturas murales presentes en el segundo tramo de la iglesia de San Miguel de Ambel y una comparación principalmente estilística entre varias iglesias contemporáneas para establecer un tipo concreto de decoración pictórica mural dentro del mudéjar aragonés del siglo XIV.

Para lograr este último apartado se ha estudiado en primer lugar el contexto artístico, y en especial los maestros de obra mudéjares (sobre todo el papel que estos tenían en la ejecución de las pinturas murales) y la metodología de trabajo que se ha seguido durante la realización de las pinturas murales mudéjares, con sus influencias y antecedentes técnicos. Para acabar se ha elaborado un inventariado de las pinturas murales mudéjares presentes en las iglesias construidas durante el siglo XIV en la zona oeste de la provincia de Zaragoza
