El realismo animado de Sang-ho Yeon

Abstract

[EN] This article focuses on the figure of the South Korean animation director Sang-ho Yeon. Having directed only two films, Sang-ho has achieved with his productions to be the first South Korean animator screened at Cannes, and he has also won awards at Sitges with his last film. His work, still not very widespread in Spain, portraits harshly today’s South Korean society. With this paper we want to review the basis of Sang-ho’s films. We will relate his cinema with the independent animation South Korean production, and how he has managed to combine realism and animation to forge a solid social discourse in his movies, focusing on the analysis of his two features: The King of Pigs (Dwae-ji-ui Wang, 2011) and The Fake (Saibi, 2013).

[ES] Este artículo se centra en la figura del director de animación surcoreano Sang-ho Yeong. Con solo dos largometrajes en su haber, ha logrado que sean las primeras cintas animadas de Corea del Sur en proyectarse en Cannes o ganar con su segunda cinta en Sitges. Su obra, aún poco conocida en nuestro país, realiza un crudo retrato de la sociedad surcoreana del momento. En el presente artículo revisaremos las bases sobre las que se asienta el cine de Sang-ho Yeong, trazando una correspondencia entre su cine y el cine independiente de animación de su país, y cómo ha sabido aunar el realismo y la animación creando un sólido discurso social, focalizando el estudio en sus dos largometrajes dirigidos hasta la fecha: The King of Pigs (Dwae-ji-ui Wang, 2011) y The Fake (Saibi, 2013).
