dc.description.abstract | [EN] To determine and quantify the species of spiders in citrus crops of Valencia, samples were collected in the field fortnightly between July, 1999 and December 2000. Five areas, Carlet, Cheste, Godella, Quartell and Riola, and two orchards per area were selected. The sampling was crried out with a engine powered suction machine applied to the leaves of the tree canopy. Overall, 7031 spiders were identified, included in 19 families and 53 species. The number of species identified per orchard ranges from 23 to 43, and the number of spiders ranges fro1n 365 to 1,320. The composition of the spider community in families and guilds remained rather stable in all the orchards. The proportion of adults was usually very low, less than 8%. The families Salticidae, with 36,7% of all spiders identified (most of them belonging to the species Icius hamatus) and Theridiidae with 27, 7%, stand out as the most abundants. Other species that can be considered common in citrus orchards of Valencia are Araneus angulatus Clerk, 1Vfangora acalypha (Walkenaer), Clubiona leucaspis Si1non, Chiracanthium mildei Koch, L., Olios argelasius (Walkenaer), Theridion mystaceum Koch, L. and Diaea dorsata (Fabrici11s), as well as the genus Oxyopes, Philodromus and Xysticus. The orcl1ards located in the sa1ne area show higher similarity in species composition and abundance of spiders. The main species of hunting spiders show usually maximum poptllation levels during the warmer months of the year, with the exception of the Thomisids whicl1 show their highest populations in spring. On the contrary, the two most abundant web building families Theridiidae and Linyphiidae, show their seasonal highest population densities during the colder months of the year and their lowest populations in summer. Icius hamatus and Olios argelasius were more abundant in the two orchards, from the Riola area, not sprayed with pesticides. However, these two orchards showed lower population densities of other spider species | es_ES |
