| es_ES |
dc.description.abstract | [EN] Invasive plants pose a threat to many crops of interest. Many of these plants are exotic and adapted to warmer and more arid climates and for this reason are favored in the current and predictable environmental conditions derived from the climate change. The species Araujia sericífera is native to South America and is catalogued as invasive, it has expanded in the last years around the Mediterranean coast producing serious losses of productivity in a large variety of crops. The starting hypothesis is that tolerance to abiotic stress, including drought and salinity is higher in this species than in many crops. Drought and salinity, as well as other stress conditions generate secondary oxidative stress by accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), to which plants respond with the activation of antioxidant systems. The work focuses on the determination of levels of antioxidant compounds, the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the changes in photosynthetic pigments in response to water and saline stress treatments in Araujia sericifera species. The plants obtained by seed germination were grown under controlled conditions in the greenhouse and were subjected to stress treatments including various concentrations of sodium chloride, a water stress and a control treatment. Once the treatments were finished, growth parameters were measured (fresh weight, dry weight, stem length, number of leaves and surface of the leaves) and the samples were harvested and used for measuring the antioxidants compunds levels: total phenolic and flavonoids levels, antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, CAT, GR y APX) as well as the photosynthetic pigments and malondialdehide (MDA) levels. The stress tolerance of the investigated species estimated from growth under different treatments was correlated with the level of activation of these antioxidant systems. When the tests were finished, a statical analysis of the data and a comparison of stress response between Araujia sericifera and different crops were performed. | es_ES |
