[EN] Current methods of treatment and management of sewage sludge are considered
insufficient to process the quantities of sludge that will be generated in the near future.
Furthermore, until there is a sustainable way to process the sludge, the problem of
sludge management will continue with population growth, rather than disappear.
Furthermore, the main final destination of treated sludge is agriculture, provided it
complies with current legislation (Royal Decree 1310/1990, October 29). Otherwise, the
sludge is incinerated; however, countries such as Germany are already restricting their
use in agriculture due to the presence of other pollutants not covered by the current
legislation, difficult to eliminate, and expected to be included.
These contaminants, which are difficult to eliminate, are called emerging pollutants, and
may come from a variety of sources, such as pesticides (insecticides and fungicides),
drugs (antibiotics, analgesics and anti-inflammatories), among others.
Faced with the above problem, there is an urgent need to find alternative ways to treat
sewage sludge, taking into consideration both the environmental and economic
perspectives, since traditional ways of processing sewage sludge, are costly mainly due
to the process of its dehydration, which represents 80% of the total electricity consumed
throughout the purification station.
Based on the above, this TFM essentially aims to integrate hydrothermal technologies
(specifically the SCWG) to existing Waste Water Treatment Plants, with the purpose of
pursuing a better economic and environmental alternative to the current processing of
sludge generated by those, and seeking to energetically valorize such sludge by
producing H2 as the main product.
