Abstract

[EN] In the paper, the author explores the view that structure is the essential component of buildings. Conservators have the options of structural repair, reinforcement, or replacement. The comparative ethics of these options are considered. The most elemental logics and basic restoration criteria would show the preference for repair of the existing structure and retention of function. Accurate diagnosis is essential. Respect for the tangible historic fabric controls decision-making. Reinforcement is acceptable, but must not be paraded. Replacement may mean substitution of an original structure system by an alternative structure, even where the fabric is retained. Ethical arguments may be complex, requiring clarity of thinking in relation to general principles and our own motivation.

[ES] En este artículo el autor explora la estructura como componente esencial de los edificios. Las posibles opciones de reparación estructural, refuerzo o sustitución se examinan desde un punto de vista ético. La lógica más elemental y el criterio básico de la restauración se inclinarían hacia la reparación de la estructura existente y la continuidad de su función. Para ello, es necesario un diagnóstico preciso de la situación. El respeto por la materialidad de la estructura histórica permite ponderar la adopción de decisiones. El refuerzo es aceptable, pero no debe alardearse. La sustitución incluye también reemplazar un sistema estructural original por una estructura alternativa, incluso cuando esta se mantiene. Los argumentos éticos pueden llegar a ser complejos y requieren discernir con claridad los principios generales y nuestra propia motivación.
