‘Out of the box’: exploring the 3D modelling potential of ancient image archives
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-05-02) López-Romero, Elías; European Commission; Association des travaux du laboratoire d'anthropologie-préhistoire (Université de Rennes); Université de Rennes
[EN] 3D reconstructions for research and conservation of archaeological sites and objects are becoming increasingly common as laser and photogrammetric techniques are now more readily accessible to nonspecialists. Most of these imaging techniques have been applied to sites and/or objects that can be physically visited, handled, measured and studied in various ways. However, little or no attention has been paid to the potential of modern 3D modelling techniques for obtaining new quantitative and qualitative information from sites and objects which have been destroyed or are no longer accessible. This paper explores the potential of Structure from Motion (SfM) to provide fresh insight into the scientific exploitation of ancient image archives. Two case studies from Western France will be used to illustrate this: a series of photographs of one decorated orthostate from the Neolithic gallery grave of Kermorvan (Le Conquet, Finistère), dating from 1911-12, and a 12-minute video of the excavation of a Bronze Age mound in Kervingar (Ploudalmézeau, Finistère), dating from 1953.

[EN] The study addresses the problems of acquisition and enhancement in the field of underground sites with particular regard to the Catacomb of St. John in Syracuse. In addition to the proposed survey methodology, the research highlightes that only through a reliable and objective documentation you can understand and study in depth these places. 3D documentation of these places hidden from the eyes of the city and, therefore, very complex to interpret has provided a powerful tool for investigation as it has allowed to show the relationships between the plano-altimetric environments and to study from a geometrical point of view the spatiality of these places providing new and valuable information to scholars of the monument.

The Digitalized Protection and Inheritance of the Woodblock Printing Called “Jinling Sutra Printing”
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-05-02) Ge, Huaidong; Deng, Shuyang
[EN] Jinling Sutra Publishing House, a protection site for Chinese woodblock printing, is the inheritance organization for Chinese woodblock engraving and ink printing of the Chinese Buddhism classics. This paper, taking “Jinling Sutra Printing” as study object, introduced its carving and printing skills, and proposed that, by means of digital acquisition and storage technology, this intangible cultural heritage could be fully documented and presented through characters, pictures, audio, video and other information.
