Miguel Fisac: dibujo y vanguardia en la arquitectura española del siglo XX

[EN] The professional career of architect Miguel Fisac unfolds through a long and tortuous path. It begins, in an almost romantic way, in his hiding place under the roof of his house in the terrible years of the Spanish Civil War. After the war, he joined a generation of promising architects. Since the beginnings of National-Catholic architecture, they carried out the herculean task of reintroducing modern architecture in the Spanish Autarky. His personality, always individualistic and controversial, does not follow teachers or schools. After a period of certain public ostracism, he develops important novelties that culminate, in the award of the Gold Medal for Spanish Architecture in 1994 (Cánovas, Andrés, 1997). For Fisac, drawing was an inseparable companion during that long trajectory. However, as we will see throughout these pages, drawing for Fisac was a parallel activity to the project.

During this time, he got involved in architectural and urban projects, and developed a wide range of activities related to cultural heritage preservation. His multifaceted personality resulted in his being a full professor, a tireless researcher, an eloquent speaker, and a prolific essayist. Through this graphic biography (where all kinds of drawings and writings are running in parallel, acting in a complementary manner), we will highlight Chueca's most significant aspects.

[EN] The architect Javier Peña Peña (Madrid, 1913-Almería, 1976) compiled, between 1964 and 1976, a collection of 525 drawings of capitals that he requested from other colleagues, many of them renowned masters of Spanish architecture such as Alejandro de la Sota, Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oíza, Miguel Fisac, Fernando Higueras or Julio Cano Lasso, among others.The design of a capital reveals a critical, theoretical and intellectual positioning; it reflects the interest towards a certain technical and structural proposal; and it is claimed as a synthesis of intentions about what the contemporary architectural project is for us.This paper, which uses a taxonomy, will establish familiarities of the different capital designs, and will look for possible chronological relationships between each drawing and the professional and academic biographies of each of the authors.

[EN] The city of Busan experiences at the end of the 19th century a violent rupture with its tradition through a forced modernization (tabula rasa), both in spatial change (tabula real) as in its understanding and in its cartographical representation (tabula virtual). This article describes the process of erasing traditional space through cartography, the way of producing and dominating modern spaces. It analyses traditional cartography in order to compare it with the modern standard that replaces it. Finally, it tries to redraw and to recover the erased and forgotten landscape through the same tool, the cartography (tabula plena).

[EN] Representational figurative architectural drawing the natural vehicle to think and to communicate architecture is essential in the tuition of our students. However, the usefulness of abstraction in the field of graphic conception as well as exploring different ways to introduce it within the teaching programmes must be also acknowledged. In this article we illustrate one of them. It is based on the notable and contemporary didactic utility of the Spatial Organization Systems described by Ching in his wellknown Architecture: Form, Space and Order. Our strategy transposes these systems into abstract graphic compositions, intended to foster imagination and creativity, thus generically triggering architectural ideation. Additionally, they contribute to clarify the intimate relationship between abstract art and contemporary architecture. The results of our students drive the development of this research, persuaded as we are by the idea of contributing to enrich the architectural debate, while suggesting ways to motivate those who are commencing their architectural teaching career.

[EN] We will expand our knowledge of Miralles creative processes. Historically, creativity has been associated with art. It can be the outcome of certain previously accepted theories as well as as is the case here of particular emotional, intellectual or bodily experiences produced by interdisciplinary explorative processes. Processes which enable the discovery of strata of knowledge with nomadic potential, which is to say: the possibility to move through disciplines and, in doing so, provide different, innovative solutions to new problems and situations. We will analyse one of Miralles project ideation cases which gave rise to a whole game of speculative variations in terms of vague and undefined materials.A characteristic way of operating which links him to the automatic writing of surrealism, Barthes semiography and OuLipo s movement constrictions. One which lead, as well, to the appearance of a series of ideation strategies which we applied to a creative development focused architectural drawing workshop.

La expresión editorial de l'Architecture Vivante: de los sistemas persuasivos a la edición crítica

[EN] L' Architecture Vivante was a French magazine that pioneered in disseminating the productions of the architectural avant-gardes of the early twentieth century. Today with the passage of time, it has become a relevant historical and cultural document. Its editorial expression is the outcome of different semantic variables that came together, although not without conflict. These include the meanings emanating from the editorial decisions made by Jean Badovici, the implicitness in the semantic frameworks that were characteristic of Ediciones Morancé s editorial design, and the contributions of the published oeuvres. Following the methodology used in cultural studies, we will examine these variables as part of a broad cultural context and interpret them from a standpoint of controversy with the reorganization of mass production processes and the integration of marketing in design, aimed at adapting cultural productions to a consumption situation. The analysis will show that, although L Architecture Vivante aligns itself to some extent with the discursive constructs and editorial encodings that sought to determine and contain the meaning of those searches, it also challenges them, in a way that it still preserves a critical value today.

[EN] Great Master of Modern Architecture such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier received not a university education in architecture but practical training through professional practice. In their teaching they always valued the experience they had enjoyed of direct and active contact with the material reality of the environment.A review of their formative experiences, and the way in which they integrated these into their subsequent educational proposals, offers us data for a reflection on pedagogical methodologies in schools of architecture. This is the aim of this article.

Sueños imposibles; las utopías arquitectónicas de Yakov Chernikhov

[EN] Among the earliest avant-garde groups of the twentieth century, Constructivists constituted a turning point in the traditions of art and architecture. They brought a revolution in design that required a new formal language and thus new modes of representation. They held that architecture, as an art, should become a mix of abstraction of form and practical engineering. This paper considers the graphic work of Yakov Chernikhov, one of the most brilliant and imaginative figures in Russian Constructivism. The work of this architect, graphic designer, and architectural and drawing theorist during the 1920s was crucial in the search for new architectural forms in the Soviet Union. Chernikhov was gifted with an outstanding talent for composition and felt a great passion for teaching architectural drawing. His preference was to concentrate on the genre of architectural fantasy, to be understood as utopian images deliberately lacking any material realization. His legacy comprises more than fifty theoretical works on architecture, design and representation. It includes more than 17,000 graphic compositions of varying sorts, among which futuristic themes are clearly predominant.

Definición de un método cartográfico para intervenir en paisajes patrimoniales periurbanos

[EN] The heritage landscapes located in the vicinity of the cities constitute complex territorial palimpsests. The landscape projects in these areas aim, among other aspects, to improve its heritage intelligibility by recognizing the relational nature of the landscape, developing integration mechanisms that allow a structured heritage interpretation of the territory. This paper presents a methodology to address this goal based on techniques of graphic analysis and expression. Specifically, a method is proposed for the definition of tourist-heritage routes that combines a descriptive-analytical phase, supported by advanced spatial analysis techniques, with a second experimental step. The combination of objective parameters and experiences of a subjective nature defines a methodological line that tries to face the intrinsic complexity of the peri-urban landscape. The method has been applied in the territorial area located at the northwest of the city of Seville.

[EN] The linear landscape has historically been rendered in pictures that show a continuous river, a road or train tracks, or by elevations and views depicting a developed space. The problem of presenting such extensive spaces has generated multiple forms of visualisation which comprise a heterogeneous whole. In this article, different modes of presenting the linear landscape are classified according to viewing dynamics and the role of the observer. Changes affecting the roles played by the author, presenter and observer in the various processes described are also examined. The ability to view these spaces through new 3D representation and viewing techniques is addressed, along with the purpose of the author s interpretation in these procedures.

Realidad Virtual (RV) inmersiva para el aprendizaje en arquitectura

[EN] The use of virtual reality (VR) in project design can be a useful tool to facilitate collaborative remote work, decision-making, and spatial comprehension. Likewise, it can be a good instrument in the teaching-learning process of architecture. Here we analyze a collective remote work experience where architecture students used 3D modeling and immersive VR in a two-week activity led by professors. We seek to understand the impact of these technologies on the creative, learning, and representational processes of the students through surveys, interviews, and observations. The results show that time for training and experimentation is essential, that teaching teams require greater acceptance of change, that the final formats must be consistent with the tools used, and that there is a great difference in the perception of these technologies between men and women.

Diseño de experiencias inmersivas para una ciudad utópica. Reconstrucción gráfica y virtual de The Walking City , Archigram

[EN] The purpose of this article is the graphic and virtual reconstruction of the project for the utopian design The Walking City , carried out by Ron Herron in 1964 and published in the architectural magazine Archigram. The main objective of the work is to generate a simulation of the project that allowed users not only to visit the city in a virtual way, but to interact with it, inhabit it and get to feel it.The article includes the graphic documentation made prior to the generation of the model in virtual reality. It is as a fundamental element for the analysis of the project, complementing the existing original documents.The workflow carried out from the preparation of the initial documents to the work on video game engines for its use in virtual reality systems is exposed.

[EN] The aim of this research is to analyse the pioneer architectural photobook, Internationale Architektur (1925), studying the convergence between Gropius ideological approach and Moholy-Nagy s editorial design in order to build a solid message about the emerging modern architecture. By comparing photobooks designed by Moholy-Nagy previously, and taking into account the significant changes made by Gropius for its second edition (1927), it may be easier to understand the importance of dissemination as a modern, specific phenomenon; therefore, today we may see the International Style as a perfect commercial tag for advertising architectural Modernism, started with the launch of the first Bauhausbücher.

Nueva aproximación a las superficies convolutas

[EN] This research is part of an exploration of the opportunities that developable surfaces offer in Architecture, with a specific focus on digital fabrication. Convalute surfaces have been subject to increasing attention over recent years. This attention is related to both a search for discretization systems for free surfaces and complex shapes with flat facets or developable strips, and with the use of these geometric shapes as an element for design composition. Making connections between geometry and construction is not new, and can be identified in the very foundations that led to the formulation of descriptive geometry as a tool applied to construction. Through an in-depth review of traditional pre-computational geometry based on classical descriptive geometry, this research reinterprets traditional graphic procedures. Through instrumentalisation using computational work processes, it is now possible to achieve in practice a level of development in this area that was until relatively recently contemplated only at a theoretical level. Specifically, this research develops and reformulates the concept of developable surfaces resting on two directrices in space, that is, developable strips. These surfaces are referred to as convolute surfaces in much of the current Spanish bibliography.

La orientación de las iglesias románicas: los métodos de Gisemundus de Ripoll (f. 850)

[EN] There is little evidence of an understanding of scientific knowledge in the praxis of medieval geometry. Among these are the methods of tracing the orientation of sacred buildings. An example of this is a group of churches located in the Arán Valley (11c-13c) built from East to West with great precision (91.41º ± 1.91º). Given the mountainous profile that prevents observing the solar ortho, these churches have been traced observation or instrumental systems by inherited from Vitruvius, Higinio Gromático, Gisemundo, or Gerberto de Aurillac. It is concluded that the method of gromatic sources, the Ars geometria Gisemundus (c.800), copied in the monastery of Ripoll, is the one that, from the geometric point of view, allows the orientation of E-O to be traced with the least error.

Lunetos. Cortes singulares en el cuaderno de arquitectura de Juan de Portor y Castro

[EN] The architecture notebook of Juan de Portor y Castro is part of the repertoire of works on Spanish stone cutting. Drafted between 1708 and 1719, it is testimony to a tradition in wich the evolution of the methods of tracing and carving had, in these personal notebooks its means of dissemination among specialists of the same trade. It presents an ample number of cuts, among which lunettes and staircases stand out for their relevance, present in the usual construction practice of the time and yet little addressed until their appearance in this work. It shares the didactic features of previous representative works, such as those of the authors Alonso de Vandelvira and Ginés Martínez de Aranda, without losing the spontaneity of a work notebook, in which the interests of the masters who contributed in its drafting are captured.

Nuevas estrategias para la visualización y difusión del patrimonio descontextualizado. El caso de la sillería de la catedral de Oviedo

[EN] Starting from the case of the choirstalls in the Oviedo Cathedral, that were dismantled and partially rebuilt in the chapterhouse of the same building, this article describes the process of virtual reconstruction and subsequent interactive visualization of the original set in its context. To do that, equirectangular images of the current building are geometrically integrated with the virtual model of the stalls completely rebuilt from the photogrammetric survey of part of it, still preserved. The technique allows to combine real and virtual images in a hyper-realistic, interactive, and immersive way. It offers the viewer a mixed virtual tour of the cathedral central nave that incorporates the reconstructed virtual model in its originally designed location. The proposed methodology supposes a new visualization strategy that, in an economic, interactive, ubiquitous, and universal way, must allow progress in the dissemination of decontextualized heritage.

[EN] The Cartuja of Porta Coeli preserves a Gothic cloister which, despite its small size and apparent simplicity, stands out for its compositional beauty and sophisticated stonework. It is, moreover, a particularly singular work in the context of Valencian medieval architecture. The eremitic nature of the Carthusian order, far from any contact with the outside world, has kept this exquisite architectural example, where the tradition of stonework and structural masonry coexist, practically intact until the present day. This text shows the results of the graphic and documentary analysis carried out, restoring, by means of the survey, the compositional laws and the trace as a graphic design method. The article, therefore, presents an initial study of this architectural space, placing it in the context of Valencian stonemasonry, at the time of the great master stonemasons, and, furthermore, it aims to provide a well-founded approach to the discovery of its authorship.
