Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , La visión de África por parte de la animación clásica estadounidense: una historia lastrada por el racismo(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-03-10) Asión Suñer, Ana[EN] The West has promoted for centuries a fragmentary and erroneous vision of the African continent, a territory subjected and enslaved by some of the great world powers. Colonialism helped foster a racist vision of Africa and its population from very early on, which was reflected in some animated short films made at the beginning of the 20th century. They did so by giving an archetypal vision of the African, both when they drew him as a human being —Jungle Jitters (Friz Freleng, 1938), The Isle of Pingo Pongo (Tex Avery, 1938)— and when they did it by providing him with features of a jungle animal —Africa Squeaks (Bob Clampett, 1940), Congo Jazz (Hugh Harman y Rudolf Ising, 1930)—, to increase the feeling of inferiority to which all these regions were reduced.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Espacios de imágenes del anime: Walter Benjamin y las políticas del consumo(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-03-10) Ristola, Jacqueline[EN] This article examples contemporary anime scholarship and how it intersects with the political thought of philosopher and critic Walter Benjamin (1892-1940). By examining Benjamin’s writings on art and politics alongside critical theory of anime production and consumption, this essay highlights the radical political potentials of anime image making for audiences. By examining specific anime production, distribution, and consumption practices, and the contemporary theory surrounding them, this article argues that drawing from Benjamin’s writings on the politics of art can help us better appreciate these practices and their political ramifications. Specific practices examined include the flat composition of images, anime media mix, limited animation’s stillness, and otaku consumer practices. This essay ends with examples from the larger Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise to show Benjamin’s political thought in action.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Posmemoria y trauma animado de la imagen perdida. Los planteamientos narrativo y estético de Funan de Denis Do(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-03-10) Martín Sanz, Álvaro[EN] Funan (2018) is the title of the debut film by the French director, of Cambodian origin, Denis Do. The film, winner of the Crystal for Best Film at the Annecy Festival, tells the story of Chou and his family, forced to evacuate the city of Phnom Penh with the rise of the khmer rouge. Thus, the film is developed as an artistic work established by the postmemory generation around traumatic events that have not been directly experienced but are fictionalized though animation. The objective of this article is to explore the narrative and aesthetic approaches of the work in relation to three clear references based on the Cambodian genocide: the graphic novel L'année du lièvre (2011) by Tian, the film The Lost Image (L’image manquante, 2013) by Rithy Panh, and finally, the artistic universe of the painter Vann Nath.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Financiación pública del ICAA en el cortometraje animado en España (2008-2019)(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-03-10) Navarro Álvarez, Adriana[EN] This article analyzes the general panorama of the national public subsidies granted between 2008-2019 in Spain by the ICAA for the animated short film. After a brief historiographic review of the implementation of the grants for the project and a short film made, as well as the legislative evolution dedicated to promoting this format, a quantitative analysis of both subsidies for the animated film in a short format in a national perspective will be carried out. The intention is to offer a study of the situation and economic evolution of the production of short animated films in Spain in this period. The results show the close relationship between the promotion of cultural policy in that period with the level of production of these films, thus playing an important role in the consolidation of the sector thanks to the revitalization of these cinematographic filmworks promoted by this public Agency.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , La fusión de realidad y ficción en las acciones promocionales no convencionales de Pixar(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-03-10) Selva-Ruiz, David[EN] Although the promotion of Pixar films uses conventional tools —poster, trailer, etc.—, they are also developed innovative actions that seek to generate awareness and cooperate in brand building. These actions seem to accentuate one of the goals of Pixar cinema: that fictional characters, worlds, and narratives are perceived as real. This work aims to analyze the interplay between reality and fiction in the use of unconventional communication tools for the promotion of Pixar films. It is concluded that its promotion encompasses unconventional content and actions of great originality that contribute to the narrative universe of films and, therefore, of the Pixar brand itself; and that these contents and actions, in their diversity, have the common link of trying to bring the fiction of the screens to a real or even physical sphere.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Animación republicana: entre la transmedialidad y la radicalización ideológica(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-03-10) Aguilar, Santiago; Cabrerizo, Felipe; Marquesán, Ana; Lorente, Cristina[EN] The recent recovery of the presumable oldest preserved Spanish cartoon short film, Francisca, la mujer fatal (K-Hito, 1933), thanks to the work of the Zaragoza Cinemateque in collaboration with the Spanish Film Library, allows us to inquire into the first serious attempt to settle at animated industry in Spain: the short-lived Spanish Cartoon Society (SEDA), which was created in Madrid thanks to Joaquín Xauradó and supported by a bunch of cartoonists from satirical magazines and political newspapers —akin to "the other 1927 generation”—, such as K-Hito, Antonio Got, Fco. López Rubio, Antonio Bellón or Manuel Alonso Moyano. During SEDA’s scarce two years of duration, these artists lit up a filmography composed of Un drama en la costa (Joaquín Xauradó, 1933), El rata primero (K-Hito, 1933), Francisca, la mujer fatal (K-Hito, 1933) and Serenata (Fco. López Rubio, 1934), all them relevant due to their pioneering nature. In the following pages we will meet Francisca’s main makers, whose work as animators was overshadowed by their own comic trajectory before and after SEDA, as well as their films, lost due to their meager printing and distribution —if they ever had—, as well as their preservation chances. This essay will also attend the framework that led to the business attempt, as well as the tense social and political context, and SEDA’s soon end due to the decease of Joaquín Xauradó, its main director, in the run-up to the Civil War.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Editorial: Animando realidades(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2021-03-10) González-Monaj, Raúl; Lorenzo Hernández, María Carmen; Departamento de Comunicación Audiovisual, Documentación e Historia del Arte; Departamento de Dibujo; Facultad de Bellas Artes; Escuela Politécnica Superior de Gandia; Grupo Animación de la Universitat Politècnica de València[ES] Editorial del duodécimo número de Con A de Animación.
