[EN] The EPFL Rolex Learning Centre in Lausana, constructed by SANAA, is one of the most relevant buildings in the new concept of contemporary architectural space. The analytical and critical research that the present work develops comprises the design strategies and tools that define the building.

    El hormigón erosionado De Neviges
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-12-20) Carrasco Rouco, David
[EN] The pilgrimage church in Neviges is a building where the experimentation with concrete becomes the main theme of the project. It is a unique work, sometimes secretive and enigmatic, whose primitive nature is necessarily due to the properties of the chosen material and its rough and elementary treatment. Its eroded surfaces refer us to an uncertain origin, full of strength and vitality. The starting point of this article is the premise that these primitive treatments appear intentionally by the clear will of the architect to investigate this old and new material.

Acerca de la eficacia y de la eficiencia
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-12-20) López Ujaque, José Manuel
[EN] The western concept of efficacy originates from a classic understanding of our relation with the environment around us. We often establish an ideal architectural shape –eîdos– which we define as a goal –télos– and we set all the available resources so said shape and goal are successfully achieved. The eastern concept of efficacy, on the other hand, is based on the lack of activism. This idea is focused on an accurate understanding of the potential outcomes of ongoing processes whereby we, as architects, always exert a progressively decreasing influence.

Lo mismo y lo contrario Construcción de una paradoja en el Centro de Visitantes del Parque Nacional Suizo de Valerio Olgiati
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-12-20) Nieto Garcia, Jose Angel
[EN] Making a riddle is to establish an estrangement to solve. Its time tends to be a closed time, finished, complete. Anyway, if the riddle eludes the solution, its value will stay in the permanency of the paradox. Its time will be an open time, in a continuous course. The Visitors Center of Zemez is a perpetual estrangement: the outside and the inside are the same and the contrary at the same time. The contrary because the symmetrical and stable exterior don’t make us predict the labyrinthine inside. The same because there is continuity and a simple and complete unity between the inside and the outside achieved by the use of a single monolithic and unifying constructive system: walls and frameworks of white reinforced concrete. This article will describe how, with the use of this material, the construction of a radical and authentic estrangement is expected.

Belleza cruda de la Hochschule Für Gestaltung Ulm
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2014-12-20) Martinez Castillo, Alberto
[EN] The dialectical relationship between rationality and organicism apparent in the HfG Ulm buildings may be understood as an epitome of the dichotomy between logical and intuitive reason present throughout Max Bill’s artistic and architectural works. The deformation of the school’s relational spaces could be linked to the emotional side of this, and thus would not be a mere adaptation of the structural order of the building to the topography of the Kuhberg hillside, on which it is set. The austerity of béton brut carries with itself not only the puritanical connotations ascribed to it in its time, but also an ideal of un-elaboration of materials and details in pursuit of a ‘raw’ kind of beauty.
