    THE IMMATURE RABBIT TESTIS : PRESENCE OF TWO DISTINCT POPULATIONS OF LEYDIG CELLS

    [EN] In the immature rabbit testis (78 days), after a collagenase treatment (0.05 %), 20 min at 32ºC in Ham F12/DME medium and centrifugation of the crude testicular cell preparation obtained on a d1scontinuous Percoll gradient, we demonstrated the presence of two enriched Leydig cell populations (CLI : 47 % and CLll : 76 %) which viabihty is higher than 95 %. In basal conditions (Ham F12/DME medium, 5h at 32ºC), Leydig cells of CLI synthesize 3 fold more testosterone than Leydig cells of CLll (32 ± 4 and 9.5 ± 0.1 ng/1 os Leydig cells) ; in addition the cells of CLI are twice as much sensit1ve to hCG as these of CLll. After a preincubation of 20h followed by an additional incubation of 5h, a 3 fold increase of the testosterone outputs were recorded in both Leydig cell fractions. Taking into account the % of 3{3-HSD posit1ve cells in each populat1on, it is obvious that the Leydig cells of CLI are very potent steroidogenic secreting cells.

    SUPPLÉMENTATION EN MÉTHIONINE DUN ALIMENT A BASE DE FÉVEROLE :EFFETS SUR LA CROISSANCE, LE RENDEMENT A L'ABATTAGE ET LA COMPOSITION DE LA CARCASSE CHEZ LE LAPIN

    [EN] Five groups of twenty rabbits received from 5 to 11 weeks of age, 0ne of 5 diets based on horse bean (Ascott variety, 36 %) supplemented or not with pure dl-meth1onine in order to obtain the following final levels of sulphur amino acids (SAA) : 0.37 % - 0.47 % - 0.57 % - 0.62 % or 0.67 %. On average the diet's protein content was 16.9% as fed, and the crude fiber level 12.1 %. Nutrients digestibility was measured with the 0.62 % SAA diet: nitrogen 70.3 %, crude fiber 18.3 %, energy 68,7 %. The digestible energy content was 2670 kcal/kg as fed. The lowest level of SAA (0.37%) reduced significatively the daily growth rate (33.7 g/day). The highest one was observed with 0.62 % SAA: 40.8 g/day, but differences between the 0.47 % to 0.67 % SAA dlets were not significant. The feed efficiency was not affected by the diet's SAA level. The slaughter rate increased with the diet's SAA content, from 58.2 % to 60.1 %. As proportions of the whole carcass, liver, hind legs or kidney fat weights were not affected by the diet's SAA content. The same was observed for the hind leg meat-to-bone ratio. According to the authors, the SAA mínimum level is 0.47 % and the optimum 0.62 %, for diets with the digestible energy and protein contents employed in this expenment.

    STUDY OF THE METABOLIC PROFILE OF RABBITS IN RELATION TO TWO DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL TEMPERATURES

    [EN] The tria! was conducted on 75 male rabbits (50 days old) of a commercial cross bred type in order to study the effects of temperature on the metabolic profile of rabbits. The animals were housed in two different rooms at 12ºC (L T) and 30ºC (HT). Relative humidity was about 65 % and the natural photoperiod was characterized by 16L:8D. At the end of the expenment (106 days of age) a blood sample was taken from each rabbit after 2 hours' fasting. The L T animals showed higher (P<0.01) daily weight gain (36.7 vs 25.7 g), feed intake +173 vs 11 O g) and feed convers1on ratio ( 4. 73 vs 4.37 g/g). L rabbits hacfhigher plasma levels of haematocrit (0.40 vs 0.381/1, P<0.05), glucose (7.7 vs 6.8 mmol/I, P<0.01), total proteins (65.1 vs 58.6 g/I, P<0.01), albumin (48.2 vs 42.9 g/I, P<0.01 ), urea nitrogen (6. 71 vs 5.44 mmol/I, P<0.01), Ca (3.69 vs 3.51 mmol/I, P<0.01), inorganic P (2.21 vs 1.90 mmol/I, P<0.01) and Mg (1.00 vs 0.90 mmol/I, P<0.01). HT animals had higher plasma concentrations of cholesterol (2.56vs1.53 mmol/I, P<0.01), creatinine (143 vs 106μmol/I, P<0.01), AST (26 vs 18 U/I, P<0.05), ALT (36 vs 29 U/I, P<0.05) and CI (108 VS 106 mmol/I, P<0.05). In conclusion, our results indicate that environmental temperature has a significant effect on the biochemical profile of rabbits.

    INCORPORATION DU GRIGNON D'OLIVE DANS L'ALIMENTATION DES LAPEREAUX

    [EN] Two trials have been done to test the incorporation of olive oil cake in diets of growing rabbits. The first trial has been realized on 48 rabbits of both sexes. Measurements of diets digestibility have been done at the age of 12 weeks. No significant differences were observecf for organic matter digestibility (70.6 to 73.8 %). The average daiíy gain (g/d), between 5 and 11 weeks was 34, 1 vs 35,5 and 33,6 for, respectively, the diets T (O% olive cake) ; G1 (11,5 % olive cake) and G2 (23,0 % ohve cake). The feed etficiency was respectively 3.43, 3.38 and 3.47. On the second tria!, done on diets T and G2, with 140 growing rabbits, the A.D.G. was 23,9 for the diet T and 26,0 for G2. The conversion rate was respectively 3.1 and 2.8. At the end of each tria!, carcass qualities have been measured on sorne subjects.

    GROWTH AND SOME CARCASS TRAITS OF ADULT RABBITS UNDER HIGH AMBIENT TEMPERATURE

    [EN] Forty-two medium sized crossbred rabbits, born and kept ata constant temperature (30ºC), were divided into two groups. The first group remained under the same conditions, while the second group was allocated at weaning to a conventional building with an average minimum temperature of 20ºC. The rabbits were weighed at 70, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 280 days, at which point they were slaughtered. The growth of the animals reared under the higher temperature was lower throughout the observation period. Their carcasses were lighter and thinner than the carcasses of the control group. The differences between other carcass traits were due to differences in liveweight or carcass weight.

    [EN] 1200 weaned crossbred rabbits, individually controlled, were fed ad libitum on Diet A (16.4 % starch, 15.3 % CF) or Diet B (24.B % starch, 11.6 % CF) from 28 to 49 days of age. Uve weight gain was not affected by diet (37.7 g/day). Feed intake and leed conversion were higher with Diet A (95.5 vs 84.5 g/day and 2.55 vs 2.27 g/g, P<0.001). Mortality was however lower with this diet (4.7 vs B.O %, P<0.05). Another group of 60 rabbits was slaughtered at 38 or 49 days of age, the starch content of their digesta at the distal ileum and caecum was determinad. Starcfí content of ileal digesta and its difference with that of caecal digesta variad with diet (hiRher in Diet B, P<0.001) and age (higtler at 38 days, P<0.001 ; interaction between diet and age was also detectad (P<0.05), since the difference between diets was larger at the earlier age.

    EFFECT OF FEEDING A COMPOUND DIET BASED ON NON-CONVENTIONAL FEEDSTUFFS ON GROWTH AND CARCASS CHARACTERISTICS OF RABBITS

    [EN] Thirty weaner rabbits were randomly allocated to three diets : a laboratory formulated diet based on extruded soybean meal, groundnut haulms, maize and ricemilling by-products, and designated compound diet, a commerc1al rabbit pelleted diet and a commercial poultry grower's mash. Feed and water were supplied ad /ibitum. The compound diet elicited significantly (P<0.05) higher weight gains (15.2 g/d vs 13.4 or 6.3 g/d), feed consumption, feed conversion efficiency and total edible viscera weight compared to the commercial preparations. The dietary effect on the dressing percentage and relative organ anó tissue weights was non significant (P>0.05). These results showed that cost-effective rabbit diet coufd be formulated from extruded soybean meal, groundnut haulms, and by-products of the milling of maize and rice.
