THE PHONOLOGICAL SYSTEM OF SPANISH

[EN] Spanish articulatory phonetics, the classification of sounds and the physiological mechanism used in the production of phonemes are discussed in this article. The process of learning a language consists of classifying sounds within the target language. Since the learner may be hearing the utterance in a different way than the native speaker some objective criteria are needed to classify sounds. If these distinctions are not mastered, he may be perceived as sounding awkward. Other phonological processes are applied in informal situations due to socio-linguistic factors such as age, social class, and education. Sound deletion in particular phonological environments are not done randomly by the speaker, but by necessity to retain semantic comprehension. Allophonic choices within phonemes make up the dialect for a particular area.

[EN] The article analyzes 97 elementary schoolbooks in Buenos Aires to determine which social representations about linguistic norm underlie in these school materials. The paper reviews -especially in the defi nitions of categories, and exercises and activities- the concepts of linguistic variety, standard language and español neutro. Based on these variables, this article sees the possible repercussions in social representations that students and teachers can develop from point of view of the publishing companies.

L'EXPRESSION DE LA CONCESSION À TRAVERS DES LOCUTIONS "QUELQUE...QUE" ET "QUEL QUE" ET LEURS ÉQUIVALENTS EN ESPAGNOL

[EN] We intend to pay special attention to a particular diffi culty for French Language students in level B2/C1, whether their native language is Spanish, French or any other else. That is distinguishing “quelque” in form and function: fi rstly, between indefi nite determiner and adverb; secondly, between concessive constructions “quelque…que” and “quel que”. These expressions manifest a phonetic similarity that must be solved when writing by means of a grammatical analysis and by a contrastive analysis with the Spanish equivalent construction through translation or “thème grammatical”. Doing so will help us to adapt our teaching and face the special needs of our students within the European Higher Education Area framework.

[EN] The adaptation toward a common European space for higher education improves the introduction of new methodologies and learning approaches, where the relationship between teacher and learner must be reinterpreted. The increasing development of the information society and the technical possibilities that it provides constitutes an opportunity to place the ICT and, more particularly, the resources of Web 2.0 in the service of active, even proactive, learning. Within the framework of several courses of Spanish-French translation, we developed and tested activities of collaborative work, thanks to the workshop support that the e-learning platform Moodle offers. This article aims at diffusing the objectives, the progress and the initial results of this innovative experience.

LA TRADUCCIÓN DE LAS EXPRESIONES IDIOMÁTICAS MARCADAS CULTURALMENTE

[EN] Language is an integral part of culture. The relationship between language and culture shows particularly in lexis. Idioms belong to the category of culturally-determined lexical units and are thus an obvious source of non-equivalence which cause diffi culties in the translation process. In the present article we fi rst analyse different classes of idioms according to the type of cultural motivation underlying them: a)reference to customs, historical events, literary works or beliefs; b) reference to cultural domains; c) presence of a metaphor entrenched in the target culture. We then focus on the different strategies used in the translation of culture-specifi c idioms (literal translation, adaptation or substitution, paraphrase)

LA ADAPTACIÓN METODOLÓGICA DE LA ENSEÑANZA DE LENGUAS AL EEES: UN ESTUDIO EUROPEO

[EN] This article presents the results of the fi rst study carried out in Europe on the adaptation of language teaching to the European Higher Education Area (ADELEEES Project, Ministry of Science and Innovation). It specifi cally focuses on the methodological changes which the new credit system is bringing about in all those European universities which are piloting the ECTS in language studies. After contextualizing the study within the broader framework of the Project and specifying its objectives, procedure, sample, and statistical methodology, the article goes on to describe the main outcomes of the investigation for teachers and students. It concludes by foregrounding the main conclusions and suggesting future lines of action which are especially valuable for the implementation of new language degree programs across Europe. The ultimate goal is to improve the functioning of the ECTS system with a view to guaranteeing that the decisions taken in relation to the new offi cial university studies are based on empirical data and national and international referents.

GENDER AND ACCENT IN THE PERCEPTION OF ENGLISH SYLLABIC CONSONANTS VS. SCHWA

[EN] This paper reports a study on the perception of English syllabic consonants vs. schwa in word fi nal position at discourse level. Our aim is to fi nd out whether gender and accent play a signifi cant role in the pereception of potential syllabic consonants, a topic which needs further research (see Takefuta & Black 1966; Bloom, Moore-Schoenmakers & Masataka 1999). Three females indentifi ed a schwa/syllabic consonant in 800 words uttered in specifi c contextx by 80 non-rhotic native newsreaders (40m/40f) from the BBC Learning English Website. The statistical procedures used were the contingency table analysis and Kendall's correlation coeffi cient. The study reveals that gender and accent do not perform a signifi cant role in the perception of this alternation. They were found not to infl uence the referees' perception, their degree of agreement being quite similar in the categories of each variable. The exploration of the schwa vs. syllabic consonant perception in terms of word position (within an utterance) and word emphasis is suggested.

EXPLORACIÓN DE CARACTERÍSTICAS CONCEPTUALES EN CONTEXTOS RICOS EN CONOCIMIENTO MEDIANTE UN PROGRAMA DE ANÁLISIS CUALITATIVO

[EN] In this study we analyzed the dictionary defi nitions and defi nitory contexts extracted from a corpus of the ceramic fi eld. The objective was to discover the relevant features in the description of the concept groups: ceramic defects and ceramic production processes. In order to segment and classify the fragments which contain a conceptual feature, we used a program for the qualitative analysis. The results consist in a set of relevant features for the description of the two groups analyzed one the one hand, and the fragments of text associated with each of these features on the other. The qualitative analysis program has proved effi cient in this study given its effi cacy to manage and retrieve data.

[EN] Evidentiality and textual modality are widely debated fi eld categories within the areas of linguistics and textual stylistics. The attitude of the author towards the topic indicates its commitment with the established proposition. In this way, his attitude can have either a rational/evaluative character (objective) or an emotional/expressive character (subjective), which thus conveys the tonality of the discourse. The present paper, which forms part of the research project “Evidentiality in a multidisciplinary corpus of research papers in English” of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, focuses on the genre “abstracts of research papers applied to computer science”. In this paper we will analyse two types of characteristic functions: the communicative stamp of the markers which correspond to textual modality, both objective and subjective according to their relationship with the evidential and judgement markers, and the frequency of its use in the genre we are studying.

ENSEÑANZA Y APRENDIZAJE DE LA PRONUNCIACIÓN DE UNA LENGUA EXTRANJERA EN LA WEB 2.0

[EN] This study focuses on learning pronunciation within the study of French as a foreign language (FLE) with the help of resources and tools of the web 2.0. The investigation was carried out both in the classroom and online (Campus Virtuel FLE, Universidad de León) and 178 students (mainly beginner level) have participated in it between 2005 and 2009. Firstly, we wanted to analyze the characteristics and modalities of different oral productions from students, as well as ICT tools and teaching tasks which have encouraged the creation of audiovisual recordings published in several educational web environments (weblogs, podcasts, social networking, education platform).We have also attempted to assess the reactions of students to the application of these tools, learning environments and pronunciation tasks, by carrying out three surveys which focus on their ICT skills and pronunciation within FLE. Finally we asked about the role which students, tutors and teachers play in the correction of pronunciation, taking into consideration the feedback strategies that have been observed in their interaction, with special emphasis on autocorrective feedback such as in collaborative pronunciation tasks corrected by the students.

ENGLISH-SPANISH TRANSLATIONS OF NARRATIVE TEXTS UNDER FRANCO. FINDINGS FROM CORPUS TRACEni (1962-1969)

[EN] The paper explores the most relevant conclusions obtained after a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the corpus 0 TRACEni (1962-1969)(TRAducciones CEnsuradas narrativa inglés), which at present contains 9090 entries of English narrative texts translated into Castilian Spanish and published under those years. The aim of this paper is to examine the most relevant results from the initial Corpus TRACEni, obtained after a quantitative and qualitative analysis, with no recourse to the books themselves, with the ultimate purpose of exploiting some of those texts in the foreseeable future. The study of paratextual information of the translated texts into Castilian from 1962-1969 might give us an overview of the kind of literature that was imported in the country, undoubtedly affected as any other artistic productions by the constraint of official censorship.

EL LÉXICO DISPONIBLE DE VALENCIA: CONVERGENCIA CONCEPTUAL

[EN] The present research pretends to show the degree of semantic merging between the available lexis of Spanish and Catalan from Valencia in 2nd year baccalaureate students. The global inter-linguistic compatibility for speakers of both linguistic communities in the seventeen semantic groups studied will show the high level of coincidence in both languages in contact. This is due to the fact that the lexis used in specifi c communicative situations is similar in both.

EL INGLÉS PARA FINES ACADÉMICOS: APORTACIONES EN LA INVESTIGACIÓN Y ENSEÑANZA DEL DISCURSO CIENTÍFICO

[EN] English for Academic Purposes (EAP) is one of the fastest-expanding sub-branches of Applied Linguistics. In this fi eld of knowledge, research carried out in the areas of Genre Analysis and Contrastive Rhetoric has had particular relevance due to their valuable contribution to pedagogical material design. This paper surveys the evolution of EAP from its origins and its contribution to the analysis of scientifi c discourse. Within the Genre Analysis paradigm, this paper also explores the concepts of “discourse community” and “genre”, and the importance that these concepts have today in academic discourse research. Moreover, this paper gives an account of the role of rhetoric studies, and particularly Contrastive Rhetoric, in the development of written compositions and the analyses of written discourse in academic contexts.

EL ESTUDIO DEL ALEMÁN COMO LENGUA EXTRANJERA EN LOS CONSERVATORIOS DE MÚSICA: UNA APROXIMACIÓN DIDÁCTICA

[EN] In Spanish Schools of Music, the teachers of German as a Foreign Language, who address their work basically to students of Singing, face an enormous diffi culty when trying to fi nd didactic materials to help them to prepare activities for their pupils. In this article I intend, on the one hand, to make an approach to the subjects which have to be taught by these professionals and, on the other hand, to offer them some useful pedagogical and practical suggestions. With this aim in mind, I present a series of exercises and activities focused on two main points: the preparations of class materials and the making of exercises based on text analysis, the declamation of different sorts of texts and the audition of poems or music works.

DISCOURSE MARKERS IN THE LEXICAL CONSTRUCTIONAL MODEL: THE CASE OF THE 'SO WHAT X' CONSTRUCTION

[EN] This article argues for an alternative analysis of discourse markers to that proposed within relevance-theoretic approaches, which attribute procedural (as opposed to conceptual) meaning to these words. This study provides a new perspective that brings together the main contributions of Relevance Theory (RT) and those that arise from the Lexical Constructional Model (LCM), thus shedding light on the role of discourse markers within sentence meaning. Rather than offering procedural information, discourse markers activate high-level conceptual mechanisms that help the hearer in his/her choice of the most appropriate interpretation of utterances. Furthermore, the present paper provides a fully-fl edged analysis of discourse markers and their contribution to implicated meaning, fi lling the gaps observable in relevance-theoretic views. Specifically, So and and have been found to be determinant elements in the creation of a new construction, theSo Wh- X? construction, which explains the uncompromising importance of discourse markers in utterance interpretation.

CANCIÓN VS VIOLENCIA. RESPUESTA AL 11 DE SEPTIEMBRE EN LA CANCIÓN NORTEAMERICANA. EL CASO DE LOS BLACK EYED PEAS

[EN] The objective of this article is to understand the relationship that can be established between the entertaining function of songs, and their ability to respond to given social processes. In this way, it could be argued that the idealising and didactic functions of music can be equated to the ideational function of language identifi ed by M.A.K. Halliday. Therefore, by analysing referential processes, transitivity and metaphorical uses, we shall be able to fi gure out the personal and social experience that musicians are drawing upon in their reactions to certain social events. In this article, we will focus on the response of the Black Eyed Peas to the 9/11 attacks in New York. To achieve this, we will do a linguistic analysis of their song “Where is the love”. In this way we shall draw conclusions not only on the discursive construction of a given social image, but also on the musical reaction to socio-political events

ANÁLISIS LINGÜÍSTICO DE LOS NOMBRES DE MARCA ESPAÑOLES

[EN] Brand name is a value within marketing strategy in every company. However, these words that are part of the vocabulary we use daily are not being enough considered from a linguistic point of view. This research analyses the phonetic, morphology and semantic of 141 Spanish brand names that belong to the Leading Brands of Spain Forum. Results describe how those words used as brand names in Spain are and which image of Spanish Language is projected through them. Furthermore, they can be used as guidelines for those people that are in charge of creating brand names.
