Departamento de Lingüística Aplicada - Departament de Lingüística Aplicada[EN] After discussing the notion of the subjunctive as the modus irrealis and elucidate its syntactic function and value, are presented literary examples of important American writers on the natural use of the adjectival subordinate explanatory, in order to cast doubt on the assertion some authors, such as the Real Academia Española (RAE) and the Instituto Cervantes, on its ungrammaticality in such clauses. While not as frequently used as the subjunctive in the adjectival subordinate especified, the paradox that is drawn not seem ungrammatical. The methodology, based on an unorthodox or dominant conception of modal division of Spanish verb conjugation, is exploratory, since there are no comprehensive studies on the subject, and is also partly descriptive and not exhaustive.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Pronunciation proficiency and musical aptitude in Spanish as a foreign language: results of an experimental research project(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2015-07-02) Vangehuchten, Lieve; Verhoeven, Veronique; Thys, Peter; Universitat Politècnica de València. Departamento de Lingüística Aplicada - Departament de Lingüística Aplicada; University of Antwerp; Associatie Universiteit & Hogescholen Antwerpen, Bélgica[EN] This paper examines the correlation between musical aptitude and pronunciation proficiency in an experiment with 29 university students of Spanish as a foreign language. The 29 participants took a test in Spanish pronunciation and prosody as well as in musicality. The pronunciation and prosody test consisted of two parts. The first part was a receptive phonemic discrimination test and the second part was a productive test in which they had to repeat words and sentences chosen for their prosodic characteristics. The musical aptitude test also consisted of a receptive part on musicality in general, as well as a productive part, which included the reproduction of tones, tone intervals, rhythms and the singing of a melody. The statistical analysis with Pearson’s correlation-coefficients revealed a positive correlation (although not for all aspects) between the musical and foreign language pronunciation proficiency aptitudes. The results are commented on in the discussion. Relevant teaching implications are included in the conclusion.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , The regularization of Old English weak verbs(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2015-07-02) Tío Sáenz, Marta; Universitat Politècnica de València. Departamento de Lingüística Aplicada - Departament de Lingüística Aplicada; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación[EN] This article deals with the regularization of non-standard spellings of the verbal forms extracted from a corpus. It addresses the question of what the limits of regularization are when lemmatizing Old English weak verbs. The purpose of such regularization, also known as normalization, is to carry out lexicological analysis or lexicographical work. The analysis concentrates on weak verbs from the second class and draws on the lexical database of Old English Nerthus, which has incorporated the texts of the Dictionary of Old English Corpus. As regards the question of the limits of normalization, the solution adopted are, in the first place, that when it is necessary to regularize, normalization is restricted to correspondences based on dialectal and diachronic variation and, secondly, that normalization has to be unidirectional.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Judgmental evaluation of the CEFR by stakeholders in language testing(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2015-07-02) Simons, Mathea; Colpaert, Jozef[EN] This study provides insights into the judgmental evaluation of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) by stakeholders or users. Given its widespread use and the debates surrounding it, a deeper analysis was required regarding their experiences when applying the CEFR in their daily practice of language testing, their perceptions on possible improvements and priorities. One hundred eighty-eight users, representing several groups of stakeholders, attended a conference on the topic and participated in discussion groups. These discussion groups were nourished by data obtained by a pre-conference survey and followed by a voting process on priorities for improving the Framework. The results show that the respondents have a positive attitude towards the CEFR. They use it for several purposes and consider its usefulness, authenticity and applicability as positive aspects. The degree of detail and practicality are assessed less positively. The most important recommendation for improvement lies in further fine-tuning and in improving practice and implementation.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Las tareas de comunicación oral en la evaluación del inglés: el uso de conectores(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2015-07-02) Peñate Cabrera, Marcos; Universitat Politècnica de València. Departamento de Lingüística Aplicada - Departament de Lingüística Aplicada[EN] Although assessment experts have been researching the relationship between the different types of tasks and their level of difficulty, this process of analysis should be pursued further in order to acquire a more accurate vision of the variables involved. In this article we study the three types of tasks most frequently used in the different models of oral exams (one-to-one interview based on a photo, one-to-one interview based on a comic strip and a dialogue in pairs). In order to carry out this study we assessed 244 pupils from the second year of Bachillerato belonging to nine different schools and having an A2 level of English. When contrasting the 3 types of tasks, our aim was to analyse the amount and complexity of the oral production, namely the use of linkers, by means of statistical tests of homogeneity and specificity.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Aproximación a las unidades con significado en el campo de la informática adquirido por extensión metafórica en los diccionarios generales de inglés y español(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2015-07-02) Ortego Antón, María Teresa; Fernández Nistal, Purificación; Universitat Politècnica de València. Departamento de Lingüística Aplicada - Departament de Lingüística Aplicada[EN] In recent decades there has been a revolution in expert knowledge, so general vocabulary has been gradually enlarged with a great number of terms traditionally limited to specialised discourse. In addition, expert knowledge is usually produced in the English language. However, the need to transfer it to other languages such as Spanish has emerged. To solve the difficulties which arise for users in the transference of specialised polysemic uses derived from metaphors they normally consult general bilingual dictionaries, despite the fact that this tool is not the most suitable when making decisions about equivalents of specialised vocabulary in other language. Hence, we focus on uses in computing field because of its representativeness and multidimensional character. The aim of this paper is to get an approximation of the treatment of the aforementioned uses in two general bilingual dictionaries in English and Spanish. From the obtained results we hope to get relevant data that emphasize the need to improve the standard of information gathered in these reference works.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Los límites de la política y planificación lingüísticas(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2015-07-02) Fernández Smith, Gérard; Universitat Politècnica de València. Departamento de Lingüística Aplicada - Departament de Lingüística Aplicada[EN] The following paper is intended to display an approach to theoretical concepts regarding the field of language policy and planning, by presenting a series of examples of policies in different ambits which cannot be easily related to those processes and theoretical devices fostered by the existing and generally accepted theoretical models. For that reason, it is our opinion that there is a need to redefine some of those concepts, to provide more flexibility and applications to such models. In order to achieve our goals, we present and discuss, among others, examples regarding discriminatory use of language and, particularly, sexist use of language, so that conclusions can be set forth about how could the theoretical schemes explain them, and therefore contribute to the statement of alternative hypothesis or to the addition of terms that could describe the real situation more appropriately.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Evaluación del uso competente de los rasgos lingüísticos del IPA en relación con los niveles del MCER(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2015-07-02) Durán Escribano, Mª Pilar; Rubio Moreda, Ana Luz; Universitat Politècnica de València. Departamento de Lingüística Aplicada - Departament de Lingüística Aplicada[EN] The purpose of this study is to analyse the competent use of EAP linguistic features (passive voice, use of nominal groups, typical verb forms, and modality), by the Technical University of Madrid engineering students, in relation to their CEFR competence levels, from A2 to C1. The results obtained with the STATGRAPHICS programme serve to identify those specific grammar structures most difficult to Spanish engineering students so that their learning may be favoured. Results calibration to CERF reference levels also renders a more complete scale of linguistic competence applied to EAP contexts.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Neología aplicada y lexicografía: para la (necesaria) actualización de las entradas de los elementos de formación de palabras en diccionarios generales(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2015-07-02) Díaz Hormigo, María Tadea; Universitat Politècnica de València. Departamento de Lingüística Aplicada - Departament de Lingüística Aplicada[EN] Research on neologisms can be of assistance in updating the entries of the elements of word formation in general dictionaries, although it is necessary first to clarify the concepts of “neology” and “neologism”, in order to apply them to morphological innovations, and to demarcate, both terminologically and conceptually, the morphological units which intervene in word formation. In this article, a research methodology is proposed; we present the linguistic resources available for use in obtaining different corpora of neologistic creations and we defend the validity of contrastive analysis to formulate proposals for the renovation of lexicographical compendia, which will be dealt with according to their general characteristics and the purpose of the dictionary. The results of the research can also be of use to update information regarding the elements of word formation in grammars as well as in specific monographic studies.Item type: Artículo , Access status: Abierto , Subtitling Tarantino’s offensive and taboo dialogue exchanges into european spanish: the case of Pulp Fiction(Editorial Universitat Politècnica de València, 2015-07-02) Ávila-Cabrera, José Javier; Universitat Politècnica de València. Departamento de Lingüística Aplicada - Departament de Lingüística Aplicada[EN] The manner offensive and taboo language is subtitled becomes a delicate and controversial practice given that this type of language functions as a lexical vehicle that provides information on the characters’ personality, social class, and setting and can provoke a strong reaction on viewers (Díaz Cintas, 2001). The omission of offensive/taboo words can therefore be said to entail a loss in their communicative function. From a Descriptive Translation Studies approach, the goals of this paper attempt to shed some light on the way the film Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino, 1994) was subtitled into European Spanish by delving into diverse matters such as: (1) the translation strategies utilised by the subtitler; (2) the way offensive/taboo dialogue exchanges were transferred on the screen; and (3) proving whether the cases of neutralisation and omission of the load of these terms might have been justified by the technical constraints of subtitling.
