William Yang is one of the foremost Australian professionals of recent decades as both a social documentary photographer and a performance artist. A pioneer in portraying the gay environment in the southern country since the 1970s, he was a direct witness to the impact that AIDS caused in the homosexual community, to which he belonged, documenting it in a heartbreaking way. His works share the commitment with many other professionals around the world who, through photography, fought against the stigma towards HIV patients, creating a genre within this artistic discipline during the hardest years of the epidemic. Claim works that in the case of Yang propose a parallelism between life and death making art from his personal life, since many of those portrayed were friends and lovers. The body tormented and infected by the virus became a fundamental theme, highlighting the series of snapshots about Allan in Sadness, his former lover whom he accompanied in the last moments of his life. A unique artist who created awareness through poetic reminiscences and contributed, from the antipodes, to normalize the patient of this disease in society.

El fotógrafo australiano William Yang fue pionero en retratar el ambiente gay del país austral, siendo testigo directo del impacto que el sida causó en la comunidad homosexual, a la cual él pertenecía, documentándolo de manera desgarradora. Muchos de sus allegados murieron a causa del virus del VIH, lo que le impulsó a inmortalizarlos durante el transcurso de la enfermedad para luchar contra el estigma, siendo el documento sobre Allan, un examante, el más representativo y completo. Con el tiempo, muchas de las imágenes captadas adquirieron vida dentro del proyecto Sadness (Yang, 1996).
