[EN] Spain is the largest citrus fruit producer in the European Union, with the
Valencian Community being the main citrus-growing region at national level. The quality,
but especially the safety, of our oranges and mandarins, is the main trump card against
major exporters such as Egypt and China which, in the last year, have increased their
exports of these crops by 684 and 1121% respectively. In this sense, pesticide residues
are one of the main chemical hazards affecting the safety of these fruits, being the cause
of most food alerts in Europe.
The aim of this degree work was to quantify the risk for the average consumer, in three
population groups (children, young people and adults), caused by the presence of
pesticides (insecticides, fungicides, acaricides, acaricides-insecticides and herbicides)
in oranges and mandarins ready for consumption, grown and marketed in the province
of Valencia. To this end, the results of the pesticide analysis obtained from fruit marketed
by 22 cooperatives in the province were processed. In addition, the quality index was
calculated, measured as a percentage of the maximum residue limit (MRL). Finally, the
level of risk was estimated using the hazard coefficient (HQ) and hazard index (HI)
metrics. The results showed that fungicides such as imazalil, pyrimethanil, propiconazole
and thiabendazole were the group of plant protection products with the highest
concentration values detected in oranges and mandarins during the 2016 to 2021
seasons. On the other hand, 99.67% of the samples analysed complied with the
legislation, and it was also observed that there was a reduction in concentrations over
time. In terms of risk, the group of children aged 3-9 years was the population group with
the highest level, although it should be noted that the values obtained are well below the
threshold of concern. Finally, the risk assessment carried out allowed the second-grade
co-operative to be aware that cooperatives 4, 8, 9 and 16 were the ones that achieved
the best results, and from there, to have the necessary information to make an informed
decision on risk.
