Managing tourism impacts and residential well-being towards a sustainable tourism development: The case of Fürth, Germany

Abstract

[EN] City tourism is expanding worldwide (IPK International, 2015/2016 cited in Postma et al., 2017), which leads to different consequences in the city environment and to the quality of life of the local population. Literature comprises various tourism impact studies which examine these consequences. It is argued that it is important to focus on the effects of tourism growth on the quality of life of residents (Deutsche Institut für Tourismusforschung & DTV, 2022). However, current literature reveals a gap for medium-sized cities, where mass tourism is not yet an issue. Therefore, this paper sets out to examine benefits and disadvantages of tourism on the quality of life of residents. Fürth in Bayern, a medium-sized German city, is the case in focus. The aim of this project is to investigate the opinions of the residents of Fürth regarding the current tourism situation, done through a survey. The results from the survey and subsequent discussion of these are used to create actionable recommendations to preventatively ensure a sustained positive tourism acceptance in Fürth, as tourism expands. The study found that the attitude of the residents of Fürth towards tourism was generally positive, but that there are nevertheless aspects that could be addressed to further improve the tourism acceptance as tourism grows. Four concrete actionable recommendations were given.

La literatura comprende diversos estudios de impacto del turismo que examinan estas consecuencias. Se argumenta que es importante centrarse en los efectos del crecimiento turístico sobre la calidad de vida de los residentes (Deutsche Institut für Tourismusforschung & DTV, 2022). Sin embargo, la literatura actual revela una laguna para las ciudades de tamaño medio, donde el turismo de masas todavía no es un problema. Por lo tanto, este documento se propone examinar los beneficios y desventajas del turismo en la calidad de vida de los residentes. Fürth, en Bayern, una ciudad alemana de tamaño medio, es el caso que nos ocupa. El objetivo de este proyecto es investigar las opiniones de los residentes de Fürth respecto a la situación actual del turismo, realizado a través de una encuesta. Los resultados de la encuesta y el posterior debate sobre los mismos se utilizan para crear recomendaciones prácticas que garanticen de forma preventiva una aceptación positiva y sostenida del turismo en Fürth, a medida que éste se expande. El estudio concluyó que la actitud de los residentes de Fürth hacia el turismo era en general positiva, pero que, sin embargo, hay aspectos que podrían abordarse para mejorar aún más la aceptación del turismo a medida que éste crece.
