This study analyses the use of pop songs in four films directed by the American filmmaker David Lynch: Blue Velvet (1986), Wild at Heart (1990), Lost Highway (1997), and Mulholland Drive (2001). The different roles that music can play in a movie are explained and each one is accompanied by a song fulfiling that function. Songs basically work in the same way that cinematographic music does but the existence of a verbal message, the way we are familiarised with songs and their musical features make some differences. Psychological roles (the ones related to the expression of emotions and feelings) are often played by songs in a slightly different way in comparison with traditional cinematographic music. The same happens with physical roles (those related to visual aspects). With regard to cinematographic roles (music as just another component of the audiovisual production), these are usually played by other types of music or sound effects in the selected movies.
