Sueños de Tay-Pi. Redescubriendo la revista musical de animación
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-03-21) Mendíbil Blanco, Álex
[EN] This paper analyzes the film Sueños de Tay Pi (1951), directed by Franz Winterstein for the production company Balet y Blay, as a result of the recent showing of a copy preserved in the Spanish Filmoteca. Comparing this version with two unpublished documents such as the original treatment and the technical script by Winterstein s, we can assess the differences between versions and the personal intentions of the author, who encountered numerous production difficulties. We will also verify that the film did have a commercial distribution, contrary to what was thought. All this allows us to reconsider an unusual work that, despite the aforementioned problems, tried to open new paths in Spanish animated cinema, with a risky and modern proposal.

[EN] Soundtracks and music are key elements of narrative and emotional expression in anime, which is a prominently popular animation genre. Nevertheless, the music used in the early decades of Japanese animation production does not have the same sonority and functionality that the music of contemporary anime. Thus, in this paper we analyze the music of the early years of Japanese animation, from the 30s to the 50s, focusing on its different functions, characteristics forms and techniques, the most representative composers, and the most remarkable animations works relative to their characteristic musical aspects. We will show how, in general, these soundtracks were highly influenced by the musical pieces of western animation that arrived in Japan during the period studied.

[EN] Based on the conception of masculinity as a set of characteristics, behaviors and attributes of the male gender, this research approaches to the configuration of male characters in Pixar animation saga The Incredibles, to explore whether these animated films are a free place for the representation of diverse masculinities. For this purpose, the essay will delve on narratological approaches and gender studies in order to set up the models of masculinity defined from the most recent theory; and to check out, through both physical and psychological analysis, how these models are transposed to male characters whose features and performance have been modulated to a greater or lesser extent depending on the sociohistorical context of production.

La distopía como memoria: la representación urbana del trauma cultural japonés en Akira
(Universitat Politècnica de València, 2023-03-21) Rivera Arnaldos, Antonio
[EN] The study of anime today is delimited by the extremes of cultural determinism and transnationalism. However, in its apocalyptic mode, it appears closely entangled with Japanese national identity and history, sometimes as a subversive agent of memory. In addition, if urbanism symbolically reproduces the imaginary of each historical moment, then it can be argued that dystopias in apocalyptic anime convey certain ideologies about Japan s past. This research analyzes the representation of the urban in its relationship with the past in the film Akira, proposing the following hypothesis: rather than speculating upon the future, its dystopia enunciates commentary on Japan s past national traumas. A textual analysis of the film is carried out, concluding that the film decontextualizes and brings together several troubled episodes of 20th century Japanese history in one fabled historical moment that allows to reinterpret them from dissident stances of memory.

[EN] Since the end of the 1980s, the Disney Princess archetype has lived an empowerment process in keeping with the social changes experimented due to feminist movement. These new protagonists are characterized by their independence, courage, and determination to make their own choices, facing any adversity that could be found throughout their journey. Nevertheless, forty years ago, there was a princess who, without saving an empire, showcased the stronghold and bravery that allowed her to reach the freedom with which she had only dared to dream. Despite all the negative connotations that have been associated with the character of Cinderella, in this article we propose that it was not her prince who rescued her from her miserable existence, but her humble nature, her dreamy attitude, and her true friends support. An admirable story that we intend to reclaim and, above all, re-read from a new perspective.
